Having found the RH Argyll a bit to large on my tight curves, he was sold on to another railway and an order placed with Anything Narrow Gauge for a Merlin Major that was in his shops getting repaired and made ready for resale. This is the bigger brother to the Mayflower I already have. He is also a later model with working valve gear instead of fixed, working whistle and brand new 2.4ghz RC fitted. He is also been detailed with many brass castings and name/number plates and lamp irons. I am well chuffed to say the least. Mike

I said it about the Mayflower and I will say it about the Major as well. Both are a superb design, they both look just right and I think you have managed to get a Steam Fleet that will fit together so well. Lucky you. Given sensible use and servicing they should last you many years.

Thanks, thats one reason I got a pair and both Merlins. To keep the family look, even though we have two different colors, and to spread the wear between two engines. I also have a little Mamod to tinker with and am working on a deal to get one of the first run Accucraft Baguley Drewery diesels to set up for battery control. I want to get a critter controler and basic sound for the diesel. Mike

I find the blank builders plate interesting. Nice etched brass Merlin plate like my Mayflower had, but no number engraved in it. I read where the later valve gear style like this one came after Wendy Davies took over management of Merlin Loco Works, so if that is true, then the number not being engraved isn't completely unusual most likely. Or might this be a sales stand sample at one time, then sold on afterwards? I know it took Simon a bit to get her up to snuff, whistle was non functional ect. I really hope someone eventually puts pen to paper and documents the story behind the Merlin Loco works, with estimates of model quantities and more of the back story. With Tom Cooper gone, Ian Pearse probably knows the most about the company. Cheers Mike

Does anybody know if the Roundhouse combination lever and crosshead with guide will fit the old Merlin engines? I wanna say I have seen a pic of one that was possibly one of Tag's rebuilds that had this feature added. Mike

If I were you I would be tempted to PM Tag. He probably knows more than anyone about fettling Merlins. Twas he that got one of mine going again with his instructions of how to set up the Timing.

He got my first Merlin going as well, sending me the timing instructions to deal with my Mayflower. It looks like it should fit when I look at the parts I installed on my Roundhouse Sammie. Mike
