Some of you will remember one of my bashes from earlier in the year, the LGB balcony van to brake van conversion...

Well at the time I picked up that model, I also aquired a pair of standard, plain DR vans - with the aim of nothing more than a simple repaint. I started work on these in October, rubbing down the markings, priming and then painting with Humbrol Matt 160 through an airbrush. I had some more custom transfers made up that I designed and John at http://www.precisionlabels.com < Link To www.precisionlabels.com printed for me, and applied these over a gloss varnish...

Then disaster - I picked up the wrong satin varnish! I read about and it sounded like it should be ok, despite being aimed at acrylic paint. The blooming disappeared after a few days but white markes around the transfers did not - these were where the varnish had reacted with the Microscale decal setting solution residue I suspect. After the intial anger I calmed down and decided the best course of action was to go back to brown and start again - that I did and last night applied a the enamel version of the satin varnish and re-assembled the vans.

The last job is to paint the locking bar black - and then they're ready for a trip around the line this weekend. What was supposed to be a simple repaint turned into a major head-ache so a word of warning to others - only use enamel varnished with enamel paints!!!!!!!!!! DESPITE what advice you read on other modelling forums. It's not worth the effort on a 'it should be ok'.
