A train I got recently

Hutch

G Gauge, Raising Peaches, Apricots
A couple of months ago, against my wife's recommendation, I bought this train from an ebay vendor. After the normal regauging of trucks that seems to be required on Kalamazoo products, it runs quietly and smoothly.

I have one of those also, it was a really cheap ebay purchase. I love it for its toy-like charms, and it runs really well. It now has a DCC decoder fitted.

(the accompanying wagon is rather out of scale in this photo, it was one my late father built many years ago!)

What fun!

Frankly, imho , change the pilot wheels and drivers color , and roof color and it would be less toy like. Something vaguely Virginia and truckee in feel.

I originally had plans to do some rework of the paint and general appearance. But the silly thing has 'grown' on me. I'll probably enjoy the toylike appearance for awhile. I seem to have drifted away from the 'cuteness' of the early G-gauge trains. Handling of the scale-like engines has become difficult without doing damage.

I think I'd leave the old model alone as it's so cute, and get a modern Hartland 4-4-0 (a descendant of the Kalamazoo loco) if I wanted a slightly less toy-like version.

Actually you are right I will leave it as is. I have the Hartland 4-4-0 with a Revolution Remote and additional detailing, it is one of the engines that can be fragile if it is picked up without care. There are also manufacturing upgrades such as the drivers with cutout spaces between the spokes and more realistic cylinders and linkage that make the Hartland more fragile.

I well know the feeling.

I have many LGB trains in ridiculous paint schemes, originally purchased for the purpose of repainting into something prototypical, a pink box car, chartreuse tank car, coke rail truck , VW, and of course my prototype bubble blowing car in midnight blue with golden stars or moons on it, etc . All of which have grown on me. The cuteness remains. Apparently my discrimination and self respect flew the coop decades ago.

I too have some of the huge, detailed locos, and they are a project to handle without damage, indeed.

Looks like the ideal loco to turn into a Cab Forward. Couple of options for you here.

My favourite is the old No. 21.
