Does anyone have 1 of these or know anything about it. I may get the opportunity to buy 1 at a 'good' price but this will be my 1st live steamer and I want to get as much info as possible before committing.
I have 1 of the electric versions and I find it a really good loco. But I really want a live steamer and this may be available, brand new, for a good price. I'm trying to find out if it a good loco to start with or should I go for something smaller. I am very limited on budget and having to save hard for this so I want to get it right and not be disappointed. Any advice would be very welcome (that opens it up to every varied idea ). My 1st question is, is it possible to re-gauge this loco?
I have their live steam Mikado (K-28) and the Mogul. They are only made to run on 45 mm. Other gauges are a bit of an alien concept to their natural market in the US. I have seen one of their 2-8-0's running and it looked very capable. They seem to have a good reputation on various forums (I looked in the past at buying one too).
The locos are well built and, in the case of the K-28, quite powerful. Support and advise from Accucraft in the US is generally good (see Cliff). There are UK based service agents that will work on them and I would suggest one checks your proposed purchace over before buying. The are just like any other live steamer to run - oil, gas, water, light her up, wait for it to boil then off you go. Note - Some US Accucraft locos need care with their valve timing, they are not locked in place like Roundhouse products, or so I am told. Had a little problem in that area with my K-28 after running it only a couple of times.
These big locos appreciate wide open spaces, say 5ft min' radius (bigger if reverse curves are involved) but can be got round a 4 ft at a pinch. If you have got inclines I would suggest going for a smaller UK/Colonial outline made by Roundhouse or Accucraft e.g. Countess 0-6-0, Darjeeling 0-4-0, as in my experience they seem to work better in those environments.
Roundhouse 2-6-2 Baldwin main driving wheels are re-gaugable but you need dedicated sets of pony truck wheels 32/45 mm. Note there are Mk1 and more recent Mk2 (post 2003)versions. Shown as current model on Roundhouse site. Says Mk 2 will run on LGB R1's. 2nd hand, good condition, seem to be going at £2K +. As a first live steamer I would go for a Roundhouse. They are pretty much bulletproof and have very good factory support for spares and a good repairs network.
Max.
Hi I have an immaculate Roundhouse 2-6-2 # 24 for sale in the classifieds if you are interested fitted with full radio control. This will run comfortably on LGB R1's.
Thanks,
Mark
Hi Paul
I have two Accucraft live steam loco's a C-16 #268 Bumble Bee and a K-27 #463 . My line is all LGB R3 radius and both loco's run fine round them . Out of the 2 the K pulls very well several Accucraft wagons the C-16 struggles on my grades and do get a lot of wheel slip on my grades and tends to run with 3 LGB coaches . My C-16 was the early model that was made and tha tender is very heavy fills like a train load with out any stock I also had to have the front pony truck replaced with a smaller wheel set to run round R3 as the model has scale wheels and found that they wouldn't swing past the frames on uneven track and grades . Have had a friend run his live steam C-19 and that run round fine pulling 5 freight cars . Have seen a C-25 they look like a very nice model would say they might be as powerful as a K .
