Accucraft boiler fittings

Hi all,

I?m currently building a gauge 3 tram and now have an Accucraft boiler care of a kind member from this forum, minus various fittings that he needed for his coal fired version.

I have a few questions I need some help with.

Firstly what threads do Accucraft use on their steam fittings? I need to get the connection off the end of the regulator (i.e need the correct dia of steam pipe, the nut fitting and the nipple that solders on the end of the steam pipe) and need the fitting that holds the feed to the drain valve. There is also a plug on the back of the boiler that I would like to wither fit a pressure gauge to again or blank off. Lastly I will also need to get a gas jet and assembly.

Any idea where I can get said parts from? I?m also looking at if I will build some form of smoke box myself or try and pick one up, maybe a roundhouse one.
Thanks,

Simon.

Simon, you will probably find that most threads are either good old B.A., or for pipes and fitting, M.E. (Model Engineer) 32 or 40 t.p.i. (threads per inch). Measuring external threads in the usual way is a little uncertain as threads never show the exact size they are called, there is always a minor descepancy for clearance. The simplest way to find out what a small thread is, is to try a 'known opposite' in/on it.

Perhaps if you know a local model engineer he may be able to help best.

They're metric Bob, but I don't know what thread.

Cheers Neil. Of course it's impossible to tell without it in your hand, and even then still difficult on occasion, which is why I suggested a local M.E. If 'e's owt like me 'e's got the lot, or at least other means of identity.

Most of the steam pipe fittings are M5 x 0.5 on 3mm OD copper pipe. Super heater pipe is 3mm OD Stainless steel.

No Danny, Accu are all metric! Roundhouse currently have a mixture of both it would seem.

Thanks for the help guys, I will getn in touch with cuffed to bits or PPS.

Now all I need is a smoke box.

I've sent an e-mail to cfuffed2bits.

Looking through the parts bin at home I came accross a mamod smokebox. I plan to use this as its a tram loco and cant be seen. This and the boiler will bolt to the chassis but wondering if I should seal the joint between boiler and smokebox? If so would silicon cope with the temp?

(i'm hoping this all doesnt sound like a bodge job!)

Also I know its gauge 3 but happy to post pics when I start if anyone is interested.

As it's to be gas fired, as long as the smokebox is a reasonable fit there is no need for a perfect seal as there would be with coal fired.
