Accucraft 'Earless' replacement piston rings?

Last time we ran my lovely old 'Earless' at the village show in early July, I noticed that it had a blow-by from the left-hand piston rod. Impressive to see, and very realistic, but in a model it's a waste of steam and therefore, power.

I've ordered a set of replacements from C2B, and, of course, I'll do both sides, seeing as how the loco is one of the first series, and has been run many hundreds of times since that happy day over at Steve's little hut near Newport.

Any handy tints and hips on carrying out the job would be much appreciated, if anybody here has actually done it [apart from Matt, who has doubtless done dozens :)]. I note also that the replacement ring set includes a couple for the valves, and I'm reminded of the long discussion that Tag had with a guy and his sad-running Accucraft Forney. He noted that being honed to a zillionth of a millimeter it was unlikely that they they would ever wear out, and there is no sign of them doing so on my loco. Leave well alone, d'ya think?

Leave well alone on the valve O ring's. I haven't actually done one of these before. Is the piston of the oil groove type or does it run an O ring? Just check the bore of the cylinder very carefully making sure it is not oval or barrel shaped and the finish is nice and smooth..................Paul

Edit. re reading the post I think maybe your saying the piston rod stuffing gland is leaking?

I've no idea what the valves look like, apart from having seen those on another loco, not the same. I don't intend to touch them - as Tag noted, the chances of anything being being amiss with them is so remote as to be ignored.

As I said in my post, the sudden blow-by seems to me to be more of a blown O-ring, rather than a sudden ovality just happening in the bore - one second ot wasn't, and then it was. This has happened to me before with an older Aster model with a gazillion miles on it, BTW.

Having had to deal with packing glands in the real world can you not tighten up the gland nut or repack it with some PTFE?

This model has neither a packing gland nor a gland nut, like an Aster does.
