Accucraft LYN R/C conversion

There are a couple of pictures here of the last Lyn installation I did.
https://picasaweb.google.com/wpandyr/Lyn Hope they help you.

Not sure if this helps but in my "as bought"single channel RC Lyn (sorry no pics it's in the engine shed or "taking up space in my bloody wardrobe" as my wife prefers to call it).

All the "gubbins" are in the RH side tank, in the second pic on the link you can see the slot in the tank where the rod that controls the reverser passes into the cab. In fact I think the only visible sign of the rc installation is rod for the reverser.

(Anyone had any experience of upgrading Accucraft single channel to two channel control?)

Ahh yes, mine is one of the most recent batch, I'm not overly sure what the differences are, hinged cab roof and no springing on the drivers?

Mine was one of the very early models. r/c was on the reverser only(GRS arranged it)

I purchased a R/C Lyn about a yr ago from PPS.
The loco came with planet 5 single channel with the servo in the right hand tank mounted upside down on pillars with a push rod back to the reversing lever.
The batteries and RX in left hand tank.
The system suffers from the receiver overheating and dropping out of link with TX. Had this problem with Futaba gear and was a thread on this on the old G scale Mad site.
With this one need to turn system on when lighting up gas and leave on all the time running. s
System says linked all the time it is left on but if I turn it off when all is warmed up will not relink until cooled down . Does not take much heat to stop system linking.
Does anyone else have this problem/

Hi Richard,
I had this problem with the Futaba kit fitted to my Silver Lady. (I had asked Roundhouse to fit it for me so it was non-standard). I gave up on it and replaced it with Spektrum equipment and I haven't had a problem since. If you look some of the aircraft r/c forums you will discover that there is a problem with the maximum operating temperature of Futaba receivers. Spektrum work up to a higher temperature spec. It's not huge, but it's a significant difference.
Some of the cheaper 2.4GHz r/c kit is a knock-off of the better known brands so the Planet may be the same as Futaba.
Chris Bird, who posts on ths forum quite frequently, is a great fan of Giant Cod, which is another economy 2.4GHz manufacturer. I'm sure Chris will pop up and post something on this subject. He has a lot of experience with it whereas I only know about Futaba and Spektrum.

As of the current batch Accucraft are now fitting twin channel R/C to Lyn as standard, with no increase in price.

It is a known 'feature' of Planet receivers that if you switch them off when hot and try to switch back on again to continue running they might sometimes de-link. It's not really a problem in use, just switch the receiver on at the start of a running session and off at the end.

Happy steamings,

John

It may be well know some but it does not say that in the adverts or in any review that I have seen. I expect better.

Dare I say it Richard, if you expect better then it may be necessary to spend more money! I've used the Planet system previously and was very happy with it, certainly given the price- so I've used the same on my latest engine.

As Steve has said above, I have a number of models fitted with the giantcod "Radio Link" kit which is apparently a Futaba copy. Out of ten locos fitted with this bargain basement kit, I have only had a problem once and that was on my Ragleth Owain conversion where the receiver was hard up against the frame and I did turn it off during a run. I have now added some insulation between the Rx and the frame and it seems OK.
Cheers

I have done several R/C installs on Lyns, can i suggest making up a "split Clamp" mount for the throttle servo. which mounts directly onto the throttle body,
this frees up the footplate and the servo can be rotated around the throttle body to wherever suits best. HS 65MG servos are fine and the Planet 2.4ghz gear has been with problems so far..

Gordon Watson.

Good idea Gordon - but I can't visualise how you arrange the drive, do you have any photos you could post? A Lyn is likely to feature on the L&L roster in the future, especially after seeing the BR lined black one on Lightlines site, tasty!

Niel,
I am not able to post pics etc.. completely unable to grasp the methods involved!

but Im happy to mail a mount bracket to Bob if he wants one, he could then photograph and post for all..and use it for his install.

Gordon.

I know this is a very tall order, but I'm about to fit a RC system to my Accucraft Lyn. I found this thread on Google. Unfortunately I cannot see any of the pictures mentioned. Is anyone involved still about, or can anyone explain how the servo can be fitted directly to the regulator? Sounds like a good method!
