Accucraft Lynton & Barnstaple coaches

After posting on my layout thread I was asked about how these coaches would cope with R1 2ft radius curves so last night I tried it out and thought a thread on the coaches might be of use for future reference.
Here's my two behind a Bachmann Lyn for scale, Lyn is effectively 15mm to the foot scale while the coaches are 16mm to the foot.

As with previous offerings from Accucraft they are lovely models with crisp detail and seating inside. The plastic isn't as tough or flexible as the LGB stuff but personally I prefer the finish as it's less plasticky.
I did find the bogies were both screwed up tight so they had no give on uneven track, undoing the screw on one bogie 1/2 a turn and 1/4 turn on the other and they run fine on my track. In the garden you may find a tiny bit more play helpful and they don't seem to rock excessively due to their reasonable weight.

Here's the coach on R1, it does just fit on the track but derails about 50% of the time when it hits the joints as it's really graunching on R1.

and closer, you can see the centre of the end ends up over the outside rail.

I turned it over and this is what is causing the restriction. If you really want to run them on R1 then you'd have to cut out the bit lined in red to give a few extra mm swing but the couplings are going to be right on the limit.

This shot shows there's a few mm before they'd hit the footsteps but it'd be enough if you really wanted them on R1.

I've just got the new book with all the drawings so I'm going to have a look if there's any more detail that could be added.

Re:Accucraft Lynton & Barnstaple coaches

They are lovely coaches, I was so tempted by them at the Elsecar show, in fact I am sorely tempted to go entirely L&B . If the current range of models had been available when 4 or 5 years ago I would have :crying:

Re:Accucraft Lynton & Barnstaple coaches

I had a close look at one of these coaches on Saturday. They are absolutely stunning models, but not really suitable for my railway - waaayyy too big. They do look really good with the Bachmann Lyn as seen in Paul's pics considering the difference in scale.

Re:Accucraft Lynton & Barnstaple coaches

They do look wonderful coaches - again if there were more options for track powered British outline models at a reasonable price I think I might have ended up with a British layout - but I do love what I have ended up with so no regrets... When I saw a complete rake of these coaches behind the Manning Wardle in the Accucraft display case though, I did wish for a massive garden railway with flowing curves and live steam... if I had the time/money etc etc :)

Re:Accucraft Lynton & Barnstaple coaches

Just a thought.....

Rather than cutting, given their intended layout's curve restrictions, how about a spacer on the bogie pivot..

You could but I think they'd need some spacers on the sides or they might wobble a lot to get the clearance you need in height. It might also make them look odd alongside a L&B loco that's all.

Re:Accucraft Lynton & Barnstaple coaches

While I realise this thread is about the full size Accucraft L&B coaches there are alternatives available if you wish to model the L&B style and are tight for space or curve radii. GRS make some nice styrene modular kits that can be either full length with bogie or body mounted couplings or made up short by leaving out compartments. They fit both 45mm and 32mm gauges. Also IP Engineering do a nice set of laser cut wood "shortie" L&B coaches again to suit both gauges. Just a thought, hate seee anybody missing out. DJB do some dry print transfer sets to suit too, including the smoking signs.

Max.

Do DLB have a website Max and can you post a link? A google search just comes up with loads of medical stuff.

Yes I've got one of the IP kits to build too, dug it out at the weekend as something to do next week when I'm off, they certainly look good in the photos and I was going to use them for another project but have gone up a scale for that!
As Mel said any details of the DLB transfers would be appreciated Max :)

Re:Accucraft Lynton & Barnstaple coaches

It does look rather silly on the R1 track in the photo, rather like me on my daughter's mini scooter!

Re:Accucraft Lynton & Barnstaple coaches

Lovely models but no good for my R1.

That's why I built my IP carriages.

Re:Accucraft Lynton & Barnstaple coaches

I might have missed a previous, but could you give a rundown on fitting the chopper couplings to lyn please
they fit without the massive 'gap' left with the supplied hook and loop couplings are they a standard item?

Accucraft chopper couplings, post 31 on page 2 of this thread

Re:Accucraft Lynton & Barnstaple coaches

I had a similar problen and got one of the GRS kits and put it no an LBG 3 axle chassis. Whilst not strictly L&B it did look the part. I put Accucraft couplings on it and Bachmann 24.5mm metal wheels which helped to lower it a bit. The GRS freelance kit fitted perfectly. From memory I had to cut 3mm off each end of the chassis.

Re:Accucraft Lynton & Barnstaple coaches

Looking at this thread from last year, I have just bought one of these lovely coaches but mine will not negotiate R3 curves !!
The bogies seem to foul the truss rods.
Any thoughts ?
