Good news for collectors of all things W&L: Joan has been announced to return early in 2013.

An interesting development is that as well as the obvious Maroon livery the loco will also be available in Black, Blue and Green with nameplates not fixed so you could use this loco for 'other'purposes. To further add to the possibilities I understand a straight chimney may well be packed in the box as well as the balloon stack fitted to the loco.

Happy steamings,

John

Are there any technical details - RC option minimum radius.
This looks to have a simular rear end to Lyn - Horrific tail swing.
But I still want one

Brilliant. Was most miffed I missed out last time around, and they simply don't appear second hand.

I may even have the money by then!

Am I right in saying that last time Joan was available was before Earl/ Countess were introduced?

Excellent!!!! I've been looking for one of these for ages but they never seem to come up secondhand. Hope it comes with the headlamp and steam turbine (these aren't fitted to the real thing at the moment).

Likewise with a picture of Mortimer in another thread, has Accucraft stopped fitting chopper couplings to their locos.

No, my understanding is that they will come equipped with Accucraft choppers. When these models were originally introduced (and the photos originally taken), Accucraft equipped them with buffer couplers.

Thanks JB.
The reason I asked is because I`m not a fan of accucraft chopper couplings.

I see, in Accucraft's newsletter, that Joan is to replace Lawley.
A cause for concern is the long rear overhang, as it was with the previous Superior.
Wrekin and Lawley are just about manageable on 2'6" cruves, and 32mm gauge.
I fear the much longer overhang of the 0-6-2 may lead to problems with couplings swinging outside the rails.
I've had to remove the choppers from my locos for this reason.

I noticed that Joan as she's now running at Welshpool has outside-framed trailing wheels, while the model was designed as the prototype was originally built. Does anyone know if the new model will reflect Joan "as-is" or "as-was"?

Not that it will make a difference to me, I'm saving my pennies for one regardless...

Those choppers are a bl**dy nuisance.

It's a bit misleading that Accucraft habe a previous version of Joan on their website, they'd be better off having a prototype photo unless of course the new model is going to be an exact copy of the old version.

I think it is safe to assume the new batch of Joan will be as per the picture with the exception that it will be fitted with the standard Accucraft chopper couplings that prove so popular with many people.

The official minimum radius for Joan is 2'6", so not for running on R1 curves.

No doubt once the new ones are built we will get some photographs of them.

Happy steamings,

John

I like the choppers as the work fine a wider radius track that is not too uneven although perhaps the design could be improved to gice some more travel.
I suspect that due to the long overhang to the rear the choppers may mean that R3 is the minimum radius if using the choppers rather than chains but that is fine by me!

Accucraft advise me they will convert the sample to choppers to find out how it behaves, if the buffer beam mounted choppers will not work they will put a slot in the rear buffer beam and put the chopper on a swivel like they are doing for the L&B Lew.

So, either way we shouldn't expect problems with the rear coupling arrangements.

Happy steamings,

John
