Morning all,

I have recently acquired a Accucraft WLLR Brake Van in Bauxite livery. I have seen plenty in Grey both W and L as well as GW but really like thr Bauxite finish so decided to add it to the collection however I previously understood brown stock to be vacuum fitted - were these brake vans modified to have vacuum brakes? Also does anyone have any reference or photographs to the prototype in use in the bauxite livery?

Best,
Dave

You may be getting confused between Standard Gauge liveries and those of ng ones, Accy may also be as well! In the history if the line prior to preservation, he W&L brakes were not fitted with Vacuum Brakes, the piping was through piping so that when a Brake Van was attached between the locomotive coaches the brakes could act on the coaches as these were mandated to have working vacuum brakes.

As for the brown livery this may be a later preservation thing not sure, my info comes from the David and Charles History of the line dated 1981 so a lot may have changed in recent years with possibly working brakes being fitted to the brake vans and possibly livery changes but I doubt that as the W&L are very keen on the true history of tye line.

I have no records of either of the brake vans being any colour other than grey with black strapping. #2 has the rear end painted a dull shade of red, in order to distinguish them apart, but that's it.

Looks good in bauxite, mind...but note there is no lettering for the line.
