AD 60 Garratt Powerhouse

The Aster AD 60 Garratt is a power house and with complete disregard for it's light loading. 4 Degrees below and ice on the ground, and pumping water through two closed by passes...and 'still she blows.

Magnificent loco. I don't think I'd like cleaning it at the end of the run though. I bet it's a real challenge just to move it around :)
 
Paul, That's very interesting.
It must have been one of the first batch!
Bob Head's railway probably still ranks as the best ever, and I don't say that lightly!
His Brunel bridge over his lake was fantastic. If there was a breakdown in the middle you had to take a boat out to retrieve your engine!!
His alternative indoor layout was also huge (just in case it rained. I remember the time that half the local Bobbies (and i don't mean signalmen) were in there drinking coffee.

I wasn't that young ;) I was doing work experience with RJH making stuff for Bob and we had a personal guided tour of the house. He had completed the Saltash bridge over the 'pond', (as he refered to it!), the wooden trestle was in the shed with the indoor layout and he was working on the pre stressed concrete bridge. I have video somewhere copied onto a DVD. We took up a Deltic and class 59 to test. Bob was very friendly and when he found out I was into US stuff, drooling over the two Big Boys, he said give me a buzz and I'll get more out of the vault next time you come up.
Lovely man and sadly he had the first heart attack soon after so I never got to see any more.
Bob gave me one of the leaflets for the Garratt which I still have somewhere, I seem to remember there was a second one, production batch, in kit form on the snooker table.
Certainly a cherished memory if a superb day playing trains :)
 
Fantastic locomotive, quite stunning. I do have a soft spot for Garratts!

Trevor will recall this one, afraid I'm not at liberty to disclose the owner, but that's my railway not his, and no I'm not being shy, it isn't mine! I wish....:brokeheart: A mutual friend was doing some work on it for the owner. I understand it was an Aster prototype that didn't get any further into production.

Yes Neil, I do recall your previous picture.
That LNER Garratt is perhaps the ultimate in Gauge one modeling.
I never saw it but I did see lots of the Midland ones. The Cricklewood bound long coal trains would come round the triangle at Syston and on through Melton and over the Harringwoth viaduct rejoining the main Midland line near Kettering.
Let me know when your friend grows tired of it and I will sell the house!

Oops, missed this reply, sorry!

Ah, I'm jealous you saw the Midland Garratts, I'm way too young as a '59 model!

Should it's owner ever sell I would let you know for sure if I was aware, although I don't think Mrs 131 would approve of selling the house! It is one of a rather large collection of drool-worthy locos.
