Adding Weight...Spremberg tank (LGB 2076 )

I have recently bought one of these loco's and I have found it to be "lightfooted" , she generally slips & slides more than my other 0-4-0's . An obvious answer would be to add more weight, but how much can be added before there is a risk of stressing the motor & gears ?
Or is there a magic formula or percentage that would work on any model ?:thinking:

I have successfully added weight to this locomotive to bring it upto a combined value of 2.5Kg. I use lead fishing weights and seal them in a plastic bag, I use bank cash bags as they are free. The additional weight has not caused any visible wear to the gears.

Go for it. There is 8 oz of church roof in mine. So long as it can still slip when pushed your not going to do much harm to LGB. They can take it.
(The only exception may be the little fieldbahn loco - it has a belt drive!)

Agreed, most of my LGB stuff has been improved by a little lead. As well as better traction I feel they ride and track better as well as dealing with leaves etc. Not sure this applies to other stuff which can strip gears with no extra weight or even a train in sight!

Thank you for your help Gents, I shall aim at a combined weight of 2.2 to 2.5 Kg then. My lead came from the roof of a wishing well that I demolished when I moved here :clap:

If you put I lot of weight in you have to be a little more careful driving and avoid sudden stops, what splits LGB gears is holding the loco down and pushing which can either be a small child or the weight of a heavy train pushing a weighted loco along the track.

i agree, some weight is great, too much can cause other issues-as noted there is a trade off between traction, and slippage, which protects the worm and axel gears from excessive wear -

i have added about 10-14 ozs or so to mine--they weigh about the same as a stainz

it is easy to put extra in the boiler area-i used lead wool in a heavy plastic bag
