ALCO RS11 US outline diesel plans sought!

Does anyone know where I can find scale plans (online preferably, as opposed to in an expensive book) for an ALCO RS11 diesel? I am planning on building one in 1/29 scale using an Aristocraft RS3 as a donor, having "cut my teeth" scratchbuilding a Baldwin AS-616.

Many thanks,
Martyn.

Hi Martyn

Sounds and interesting project. Here is a drawing of an RS11 from Wills Train Art

Can you post a picture of your AS616?

Colin

Thanks guys, My Baldwin AS-616 is a co-co road switcher, finished in UP colours (but probably will get a repaint in SP "Black Widow" colours eventually as luckily they used them too). It uses a couple of MDC Speeder cheapo chassis to power 4 wheels on each bogie, the frames being built in plasticard as there is no commercial version which comes anywhere near - as such its not the best nor quietest runner though adequate around my small yard, but conversely its a little big for said layout! It was built using a line drawing and lots of photos, and scaled as best as I could guess to match my 1/29 stock. Construction was around a framework of Plastruct tubes, flat areas being the usual overlays of plasticard. I will try to get some pics up shortly.

[align=center]Hi Martyn,

try this for the outline drawing
robs@railfan.net
or Trainz Resources directory

in the PRR book this is lisyed as type AS18m

Marvellous - a dimensioned drawing! At the NMRA convention I had a chance to put an Atlas HO RS11 and RS3 next to each other (both respected as accurate scale models) and the overall length and wheelbase are near enough identical  so if the wheelbase of the Aristo RS3 matches the plan dimensions its basically a case of a new body on the Aristo chassis, plus a modified fuel tank arrangement underneath - even easier than I thought!

Hmm not quite as simple after all! Looking at the plan above the Rs11 is a 31'0" wheelbase which equates to 325.5mm in 1/29 scale. The Aristo RS3 has a 300mm wheelbase. So some chassis stretching may be required after all (further investigation required - it may be the Aristo bogies are set too far inboard but the chassis is the correct overall length?) Watch this space!

As promised here are some pics of my Baldwin AS-616 (taken today, bit dull unfortunately!) Now I have obtained some more Kaydee 820 couplers these will be refitted shortly.

Just trying to decide whether to leave in UP livery or repaint it in SP colours to match the rest of my locos!

[align=center]Super job that Martyn, I want one, I always like those rakish Baldwins they got a lot of personality about them modern loco's seem to lack,
dont repaint it make another one ,

Thanks Pete, very kind of you. If I was to do another it would probably be a 416 B-B using Aristo trucks as these were the hardest parts to do and I'm not totally happy with the running as it is. It took an awful lot of hours to build as the grilles were fabricated from 1/4 round section plastic and LOTS of cutting! (Must invest in a NWSL "chopper" next time I try something similar to speed this aspect up!) Directional Lights work on the loco. The actual structure is a fairly simple shape to make though, no compound curves to worry about!

Thanks for the kind feedback re my AS-616 guys; the RS11 is on the backburner currently due to the layout extension ready for "Trainwest" at Melksham next April, plus ongoing freight stock builds, but I hope to get started on it sometime in the new year. Too many projects, not enough time . . . . . !
