Amax battery powered locomotives

Just bought one for £120. Speed control is VERY coarse and disappointing, but bodywork is OK and obviously sourced from LGB somehow....
Could be promising if permanently coupled to a coach with pickups, then it could be either ananlog or digital...fit it with smoke unit and decoder and you have a digital loco for about £200 instead of £500+ from LGB....
Anyone else had any thoughts ?

I agree that the plastic wheels may not last too long, but I guess it depends on how fast and hard you run your trains.
In the meantime I have a spare decoder, a coach with pickups on the wheels, so I could wire one up to see how it goes.
Anyone think I am barking mad ?

There are certainly some interesting thoughts here about converting one of these to track power.... what voltage do they run on (I'm guessing something like 7.2 or 9.6 volts, from a standard nicad pack?), and has anyone actually taken one apart and had a look at what the motor/gearbox set up is like?

Uses a standard 7.2 battery Jon. Diesel Donkey has modified and improved his, and there is a thread about it somewhere? He also did a YouTube video.

Control is very coarse as mentioned, and the sound can get annoying, but as a battery loco and a bit of fun when the track is too wet or dirty and for winter running, it's okay. I quite like it though.

Mine was brought for me as a 50th birthday pressie by Mizzy Gizzy....

I agree Paul.
Why is it so abhorrant to even mention LGB in these threads. They did virtually start G anyway.
That loco (the LGB one) is a steal at that price and its decoder fitted (OK it will probably go up in price). To compare it to anither loco seems fine and logical to me.

I think you mis-understand me, Alan - my comment was made regarding the raising of the touchy NQD subject yet again, opening the door to trolling. This seems to have appeared on three thrads in quick succession, I was beginning to smell a long-tail. As posted in the other thread, I personally have LGB and NQD...and Roundhouse, Accucraft, Beck, Bachmann, uncle Tom Cobbliegh.....and I have no issues with any of them.

Well, I'm not so sure about that Tom Cob.............. bloke :laugh:

Keep you eyes out on the sales thread or post a "wanted"......

Got this one on here VERY cheap!! just deciding weither to stick a decoder in it or make it battery power to use at the model engineers as there is no track power there! ;)

Looks great mmts. How much?

As this eBay one is fitted with adecoder I would expect it to go for about £250, in which case it's a good buy.
Just to thank you for your comments and in the last half hour the motor has overheated and the plastic gears are binding.
You gets wot you pays for.
A salutory lesson, and, yes, I have probably been a d***head.
Ah well, I have now got an unpowered loco that I could double head with another loco......
At least I did not get into converting it to digital with sound....

I picked up a mint condition digital-chipped LGB one a little while back on ebay for under £250, and then when I received it found that it had an aftermarket sound unit in it too, which hadn't even been mentioned in the auction!

To be fair, the 'speeling' of Cobbl...um.... is subject to revision pending research! :rolf:
