I have been searching to find the size of the drills and taps used by Aristocraft for there rail joiners . I would appreciate any help as to the sizes of each as well as where they may be obtained. I don't seem to be have much luck on google,

for info, not mine, I hasten to add
just remembered seeing it somewhere

I asked the same question myself a while back.

https://www.gscalecentral.net/track-track-laying/aristo-fishplate-tap/msg321000/#msg321000

and managed to get sorted via Tracy Tools.

However having been out to the shed, I have a spare set, should you require it.

What set was it that you ordered (product code)? I am roaming around the website with no idea of what I'm looking for :-\

Easy enough to find on google: Aristocraft part ART 11902 2mm drill and tap set.

I believe the dimension Steve gave is correct. I am also sure that Tracy Tools will provide what you want - it seems Nodrog was able to get his requirements and he has made you a good offer considering the low availability of Aristo-Craft products.

For what it is worth I looked at the following UK web sites (large scale retailers) today and was not able to see this item in their stock:
Garden Rail Centres, Garden Rail Supplies.Kent Garden Rail, Scottish GR, Hattons, P&S Hobbies and Kernow Models. I also looked at Classic (Cleethorpes) but their web site was not easy to follow.

Probably difficult to get hold of in the UK I guess, but the re-launched ex-Aristo stuff from Polk's Generation Next shows the set as in stock, and confirms it's a 2mm drill and tap set

http://polksgenerationext.com/product/tap-drill-set-2mm-for-track/

Shouldn't be difficult to find a 2mm drill bit and tap from a tool supplier as has been suggested.

garden railway specialists have one in there second hand section under aristocraft,,,,

Hi JR,

I buy 1.6mm drills and a 2mm tap which does the job.

Cheers Henrik

Ditto.

Web companies like Chronos are useful.

Edit; Might just add that small drill bits are best bought in 10's ;)

Granddad Gnome has been in touch, so my spare set will be heading off in the post soon.

Yes that would work.

The drill will break at some point but the tap should last for ages. Here is a tip from when I did metal work with my Father a good many years ago. Perhaps modern design makes this unnecessary now but it still works well.

Turn the tap one full turn in to the hole, reverse by half a turn. Forward one full turn, back a half turn - Carry on like this until the tap feels free in the hole.
The reversing clears the cut of any swarf and cleans up the thread.

Still using the Aristo tap I got years ago and purchased a pack of ten 1.5mm HSS drills from Screwfix.

Well guys i'm just amazed as to the help that can be got from this marvellous section of our hobby. Thanks to you all for all the information and also thanks to Nodog1826 who has kindly supplied me with a set. :o

Ordered from RS, also with 10 x 1.5mm drill bits, I'll let you know how it goes....
