This Aster 9F is a delightful model to run.
It is economical with the meths and is happy with the standard blue stuff from the hardware store. It doesn`t want to slow down at all with the by-pass closed (pump on) and on the video is powerful enough to haul 25 wagons and more if required.
You need the drain cocks on to start and perhaps half a lap for everything to warm through. It is not a massive water carrier so on a 30 min run it needs topping back up at least twice.
On this run the glass was up to the top just before priming level so it was only whispering a bit of steam. The by pass is conveniently placed should you need to adjust it
I am looking forward to steaming it next time...its a real beauty.      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQXPQ2okt44

Nice one Trevor would look nice pulling the Pines Express :D

they are steady, powerful locos, my friend has one. thought all asters had to run on the hotter de mineralised meths? also, the do use lots of water, his has run dry once or twice. good detail on them also... mart

I think this is only the 5th time the engine has run and if you are diligent when running you should never run out of water.
Like I have said, it will run fine with the pump on and it is easy enough to top the tender water up.
I would that should be a basic principle for any owner operator to keep an eye on this.

Regarding industrial meths you shouldn't have to use this if the engine is 'set up' correctly
Regards

i run all my meths locos on the regular purple stuff no probs. never understood the need for demineralised meths, maybe they fit smaller burners? suppose it depends on who builds them, owner (kit) or factory. yours is clearly set up well. mart....
