ASTER ALLEGHENY & BEYER GARRATT ON E BAY

Yeah saw those earlier. That's a lot of dosh for a toy steam train. For that sort of money I think I'd like to see more than 1 photo on the Garratt listing!

Re:ASTER ALLEGHENY & BEYER GARRATT ON E BAY

Aster models command high prices and in terms of time and skill required to assemble a Garratt is effectively two locos.

Re:ASTER ALLEGHENY & BEYER GARRATT ON E BAY

The AD 60 is a New South Wales locomotive so you would think that you could probably obtain the best price in Oz if you were selling. While the local Aust Aster agent (Argyle) doesn't have any on offer (or indeed apparently any mention of it on their site, and I have never seen one here although I can't say that is really indicative) they are currently quoting a price of about $A 15,000 for a US Challenger 4-6-6-4 due for delivery later this year, so given the Garratt is at least as complicated the price is likely to be about the same I would have thought - but 13000 quid ( a bit over $A 19000) seems a bit steep for one which is second hand. I would hate to think what the shipping would be for something of that weight, but then again I don't suppose anybody willing to spend that kind of money would really care; but if they did have the money and want one they probably already have it from the production run. I imagine the pool of potential buyers is quite small (it certainly doen't include me)!

Re:ASTER ALLEGHENY & BEYER GARRATT ON E BAY

A real joker, Aster models altough expensive new can keep their value but usually loose some. Seeing similar models on ebay before I would say that the very top prices are £2500 and £5000.

Probably will have their own private aircraft to fly it wherever they want at that price. :rolf:
Puts me in mind of a little handdbuilt 1/43 model of a pre-war Maserati 8C monoposto racecar, made about 25 years ago that cost me c£40, wich I sold on Ebay a year ago. I thought I would be lucky to get £30-£40. It sold for £400 no questions .
Buyer contacts me to ask if it is ok to send his driver up (from London, 65 miles) to pick up, cash. 2 hours later a fully loaded pristine black Range Rover shows up with his own personal factotum. Apparently the buyer just happens to own the real car (c £3-4 m) and a few others of the same marque.
Oh, and while I am at it do I have anything else similar the driver could buy as a little Xmas gift for the boss. "Of course" say I," how aboout one of these, a nice little hand built 1/43 Birdcarge Maserati". "Oh great", he says, "The boss has just put a bid in for the real one, he'll love that". N.B. real one c£4-5m.
As they say something is only woth what another is willing to pay.
Max.

Regards the 15" gauge Flying Scotsman on Ebay
The builder must have a production run going. Another is featured in the current issue of Heratige Railway, "Built for a private buyer" cost £250,000. I thought the Bank of England had juust announced there had been a significant drop in inflation. 10% hike in 3 days ? :rolf::rolf::rolf:

Re:ASTER ALLEGHENY & BEYER GARRATT ON E BAY

Ok ... I know a guy who spent a lot of money on a spirit fired "flying scot" in G scale, he wont tell me how much.... but what I did notice is that the scale of "standard Gauge" models is far bigger than the normal G sale stuff. This Garrat would be impressive but you would need more than a rake of standard gauge wagons for it to pull, it would look absurd pulling LGB or similar wagons... its a model for a very large outdoor layout with 15' curves.....

If anything I'd have thought the opposite, ie. the scale of a standard gauge model running on G1 track is smaller than our typical G toys. Models of these big locos do have a certain "presence" about them though. I agree deffo a model for those blessed with generous curves on their layouts (generous curves on a model would be a different topic altogether!)

Re:ASTER ALLEGHENY & BEYER GARRATT ON E BAY

Wonder the RH&DR would give me running rights if I bought the Scotsman?? (dream on.....)

Well the trick is to wait and see if the price drops.... a 15" 4472 would be very nice and I'd bet RH&DR are even looking at it... Id bet if you bought it for them with your own deal re a skim from the fares to cover your own costs????
I have a pic somewhere of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy at the RHDR's 21st birthday... a 1/4million is probably a tad overboard when one considers one can buy here a full size working paddle steamer with commercial certification for around $100,000..... All you have to do is get a masters ticket and be able to afford the firewood at around $300 a tonne and then realise you'd burn maybe 2-3 tonnes a day....

There was a guy in Tasmainia ( near Port arthur) with a 15" garratt sort of like G42 that he ran on his private railway but don't know what happened to it, probably sold to the USA though now with the GFC causing major financial chaos there I suspect the Scot may not be sold there.... Keep your eyes peeled for a price reduction or a "Best offer"

 the one from the Bush Mill Railway, now closed. This was the famous Little Train From Downunder that toured The Coast of Kent, and the Ratty. It was a half size model of the very first Garratt.

Gaaargh - how did I miss that one visiting the Romney????? 1993 or 94 it seems? I see it lived over here on the Perrygrove Railway for a while around 2007 ish , but was put up for sale and I cannot find where it's gone?

Re:ASTER ALLEGHENY & BEYER GARRATT ON E BAY

Well that question has sort of been answered. From memory it was green and seemed to run quite niceley maybe a google search would locate it. I'm intrigued as to the fate of the subjects that started this thread. Seller has ended the listing as they are no longer available, sound suss?
