Bachmann 2-6-0 motor issue

My Bachmann Spectrum 81498 2-6-0 Mogul has very low run times. When I recently tried to run it, the locomotive would not move. I can hear the electric motor operating. I can easily push the locomotive and roll the wheels/chasis. I therefore suspect a gearing issue. Does anyone have experience with resolving these symptoms?

Bachmann gears split after 10 - 20 years, with the results you observed. I've replaced many of them.
New axles with a "D" shape holding the gear are available from Bachmann parts. NWSL makes a delrin gear that fits the original splined axle, though it is more expensive.

A year or two ago I had the same problem. I agree with the advice provided so far. I made a video of the repair I did. Hope it helps. <

I have only ever seen the more basic locomotives, but that gearbox looks very familiar.

It's the same problem with the Bachmann trams (streetcars). If you get 10 years you are luck.y
