Good evening to all..I think I have a major problem with my Consolodation !!!

Ive had the loco around 3 years now and it has not been used at all,.. I put the loco on my short track to check it and I got ...
1.... lots of smoke coming from the loco (everyehere)
2.... a short circuit

Does anybody have any ideas on what ive donr to it please, if I need to get to the motor then do you know how I go about this as the instructions with the loco are not very good !

sounds more like the circuit board than the motor, which can be accessed by pulling the front off the smokebox.
Getting to the motor is more difficult as you need to remove the chassis and there are a few delicate bits as you seperate it from the body that you need to be careful of when reassembling.
If you have to go down that route then a nice big foam pad will prevent damage.

I agree that the circuit board is suspect.
However there are some mechanical issues, that may be easily fixed, that may be causing the loco to lock up. If this is the case your controller should have tripped before burning out the motor, but it appears that this may not have happened.

Where exactly did the smoke come from ?

I have a Connie that suddenly stopped out on the track once with smoke coming from the tender and the firebox area of the loco. Again it did not trip the cut out on my Train Engineer/Crest Controller/Transformer combo. I could not work out what happened, although the pony trucks were off the track. I had something similar happen with a K-27 crossing points with one set of its drive wheels that dropped to the side of the rail heads, but I caught it in time before any damage was done.

It could be some wiring overheated and the plastic coating melted and fused to a nieghbouring wire and set the whole thing off. The wiring in my loco's tender was fried spaghetti as was everything up to the circuit board in the loco's ashpan.

I had to do a full rewire from the circuit board in the ashpan area back to (nothing forward of this board was affected), including the tender's wheels. But it has run alright since. Don't be tempted to leave any wiring in that you think is reusable, just replace the lot in the affected area (don't ask me why :@). The loco comes with a full re-wiring diagram that is very helpfull. A trip down to Maplins will equip you with some suitable connectors at the tender if those have fried, plus of course the wiring.

If all else fails remember Bachmann (US) have a lifetime guarentee on their locos'. Ask Bevercreek on here about that. Do not despair !

I can certainly affirm the life-time guarantee. They totally replaced my loco as it had been updated as a model and there were no spares for it The only thing is that you have to ship the loco over to the US to get it.
There have been a few Connies that have fried their innards and it maybe down to the less than robust wiring that Bachmann have used in the past where the insulation burns off too easily when under excess load (like jammed running gear etc) to allow short circuits to occur.
You could try the Bachmann UK support but although they seem to know a bit about Connies, they pass most probs with US outline kit over to the State-side arm of the company
