Bachmann gears, help wanted

For all things Bachmann, their Forums have a lot of useful info. The cracked gear replacement is described in this thread:

HOWEVER, there are 2 types of axles, and it looks as if you have the early type with the knurled axle. As you will see in the above thread, Bachmann changed the design so the axle and gear have a "D" shape. The axle and gear are sold out!! Do NOT buy the gear shown in the Parts list for the 4-4-0. [Hint: most parts for the 4-4-0 and both 2-6-0s are interchangeable, and the gears are in the 4-4-0 list.] The Parts dept will try to tell you it is the right part, but it only works on the new axles. As they can't sell you a complete axle, you will have to use the NWSL version:
"go with NWSL the correct gear to buy is a 25 tooth gear which is #2226-6. Go to NWSL.com click on the search button, type in 2226 and it will come right up. Current price $12.95 NWSL says it is for the 2-8-0, but is actually correct for the 4-4-0, 4-6-0, or the 2-8-0."
