Bachmann Lyn,The original version

Hi Folks,
i recently have sold a lot of my deceased brother in laws G Scale stuff on this forum. One item was the original version of the Bachmann Lyn.I was able to put an offer in on this myself which my sister eventually accepted.
This loco was purchased brand new but sadly due to health issues,Robert never built a railway,or ran this engine.
Yesterday i took it out of the box,and gave it a run.I have to say i was delighted by performance, despite reports to the contrary, about the early version. However i was disappointed in that the smoke unit didn`t work.Very odd considering,it had never been used.Anyhow,my question is,does anyone know if its possible to get another smoke unit fitted to this loco.?
I have actually e mailed Bachmann Europe and they simply said, that its an older loco and they do not have spares. This could well be the end of it,BUT surely these units are universal...The New loco is the same size is it not,so i`d have thought a modern smoke unit would suffice ??

I also have a question about an Aristocraft Rogers, but that will be another day.I really want this loco working as it should, for Sentimental reasons.
Any thoughts then...

Thanks
Ade

Depending on the funnel, you could fit an LGB one in or a massoth smoke unit.. just a suggestion

Check to make sure it is not just a wire that has come adrift, that was the fault on my old Lyn when bought 2nd hand. If it has failed a Seuthe make smoke unit - they make one suitable suitable to fit in this size chimney and is a simple swap job.
Max.

I wondered about an LGB One Phil ...Thanks for that.I am not at all technical i `m afraid,...but will make contact with a local chap who may be able to assist.I did mention about an LGB One in my e mail to Bachmann, but they never commented.
As i say though, surely the Smoke units used in the Modern Lynn, would fit the old one ??

Cheers

Ade, if checking the wiring doesn't fix it, take the smoke gene out and measure it then try these guys;

http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/index.html

Their smoke genes are supposed to be very good and reasonably priced. I think I'm right in saying that Paul Holt uses them and his locos always seem to smoke like Billyoo.

Hi Ade

I am changing an older Bachmann 4-6-0 into a Hayes Camel - I have removed the unused smoke generator as I will install a hunter systems/blower mod (as per my earlier YouTube footage below) So IF it is the size you need** and you want it for just the cost of postage let me know.

** let me have the dimensions of the existing one if you are interested :nerd:

Regards
Rob

Thanks guys for all the help....Also for the vey kind offer above.I have no idea how to strip the loco down,to get into the unit, but will have to look.Last thing i want to do is cause damage, because of the sentimental value to this engine. Will be in touch

Can you get to the smoke unit through the smokebox? If that doesn't work you get the chassis out by popping off the domes to reveal screws underneath, that might give access to the smoke unit if point 1 didn't .
Unless you are feeling very brave don't attempt to take the chassis block apart though as it's a right s## to get the wheels back in square and in gauge, (they are quartered by the square axle but they like going in at an angle unless you use a lathe or big vice to get a nice square on push).
They are nice runners though as you say if you get a good one. If Robs offer doesn't fit I'll happily see if I can find it in mine as I don't do smoke

The smoke unit in the new Bachmann Lyn doesn't go up into the funnel at all, i would think the old one did the same too.

not to be insulting, but you know there is an on-off switch behind the smoke box door?
and that it takes a goodly amount of voltage to get it going -about 12 as i recall

i had one and while i ran it rarely, it wasnt bad-i loved the outline and paint however
(sold mine to a forum member who needed it)

as i recall the reservoir for the smoke unit seemed to leak-so you might also give this a check-
im not sure i can offer a solution, (so to speak)
but....if its thoroughly cleaned-perhaps a good glue , if indeed its got a leak
the other thing you should be aware of, if it is of great sentimental value to you, is that the plastic on these is brittle and of rather poor quality-a basic styrene-it breaks easily, and can do so simply sitting, via shrinkage etc

the other tip, is to keep an eye on the wheels-the become dirty easily and will pit, so regular cleaining , not only the tires that contact the rail, but also the backs will really help

yes,the smoke unit is in the smoke box area itself, directly below the funnel. You can remove the funnel,as on most (All ?) Bachmann locos for ease of access to drop in smoke oil on the smoke unit element.
Will attempt to take the loco apart, using Pauls methods tomorrow.Going off line now,Early start tomorrow. Many thanks again for al your great help.So much more helpful than Bachmann Europes reply,of we don`t stock parts for old engines.

Chhers then

Oh Yes Steve...I did know about the on and off switch. Ha Ha...But good point, there`ll be those that don`t i`m sure.
I have 3 Bachmann Big Hauler loco`s and all their units work fine on an LGB 1 Amp controller with just a few drops of Bachmann smoke oil.I was testing the loco on a small indoor loop, using a 1 amp controller.Just to be sure,i tested another loco too, same conditions and that worked fine, pumping out the smoke.I put an LGB Stainz on,too and that looked like Live Steam HA hA !!

REALLY GOTTA GET TO BED NOW

Cheers
