Bachmann Spare Parts

8| just wondering if anyone else is suffering the same frustration I am having trying to source a spare part from Bachmann. Yes, I am aware of the Limited Lifetime gaurantee, and packing up the loco, and sending back (and some lucky people have received new locos), but all I want is a small gear wheel, worth probably 50 cents. They won't supply, it doesn't exist, send the loco back etc is all I can get out of Bachmann, despite them actually supplying a spare some 10 years ago (that part lasted 20 minutes before it too stripped).

All I want is a gear wheel for the Bachmann Porter Side Tank loco (the original version with the plastic side rods). It is actually two gears, side by side, that fit on an idler axle, one gear meshing with the worm drive, and the other with the final drive on the main axle.

Does any one have one? Does anyone make suitable replacements?

Please don't tell me to send the loco back.... that costs more than the loco is worth, and I've read all the other stories on here about this.

I had a similar experience with Aristo Craft, my Train Engineer had the crystal fall out, and didn't have enough 'leg' on it to resolder. Usual story, send it back etc etc. But I e-mailed them, and explained all I wanted was the part, worth $2 tops, to do it myself. In less than a week, the part arrived, and 10 minutes later, I was running trains again, Their strength, I believe, is they have people that know what they are talking about.

Take some measurements, count the teeth and work out the gear Mod (Module) and DP value (google it to find how) then have a trawl around ebay, r/c model shops and specialist model gear suppliers. It's worth having both the Mod and the DP values calculated as some gears are made to standard DP values, some to Mod values.

No guarantees, but in the past I've had reasonable success finding replacements for various gears for stuff from N gauge to LGB.

I have this theory that makers like Bachmann are unlikely to use odd sizes of gear if there are standard parts available.

I have just obtained a replacement gear for my elderly Bachmann "Columbia" 4-4-0 from "The Sparesman" - tony@engineering-maintenance.co.uk - at very modest cost. I know it's a long way from where you are, but give him a try. No connection except as fellow member of G Scale Society East Midlands Area Group.

I needed a new gear wheel for my Porter and Bachmann said it wasn't available and wanted to sell me a complete new powered chassis for about $80! Ended up selling it for parts....hope you have better luck than me.

X( That's the response I got too. So much for lifetime guarantees, and customer service.
