Alway nice to see the prototype as an aide to making the correct model. Note the final picture of a Washington conduit car and trailer;- thus not needing the overhead. Alyn

This Lynchburg one at the Shore Line Museum, East Haven, CT, isn't too far removed from the Bachmann open car.......

Great pictures Alyn. Interesting assortment of trucks under the cars. Look like Brill and, also Peckham.

i love the bachmann trams, pity i dont have wires, i couldn't bring myself to run electric without.

With not too much work both make up into nice trailers for Steam Tram Locomotives. Alternatively, the closed one could be converted to Diesel Powered Type by removing the Pole and putting gubbins on the top as the Vicinal Autorails. These besties look little different to an Electric Tram except for the roof-line.

Somewhere .........on the net , I saw a battery powered tram , JUST like the Bachmann closed one , only without a pole , and it was full of passengers .

Yes there have been battery powered trams, I have also traveled on a Vintage Tram in Denver that had a small trailer attached with a Diesel generator in it. So lots of options out there.

Bachmann does make some nice looking trains. It's a pity that the mechanisms are less than perfect, to put it mildly.

All comments noted, I have this picture of a compressed air tram. The Bachmann power block of the last four years (comes in the red box, NOT the dark maroon/red box) is better I have remotored some of mine with Buhler motors which I got from Proops. Alyn

It is not a difficult job to fit an LGB Motor Block to a Bachman Tram if you are really worried. Me I am converting my 3 Bachman Trams into Trailers.

Yes went looking for that myself. They experimented with them in Bendigo and years ago as the SEC system was closing in Beautiful Bendigo the Depot superintandant Ken Makepeace explained to me that the were controlled by lowering and raising the battery plates into or out of the electrolyte with a handwheel. Have seen a pic of one outside the Mechanics Institute but cant find it... However just to show how through my search was I did find a pic of a Royal doing something usefull, yes none other than Chas driving a Birney car, he must have been under very very close supervision those Birneys are priceless. From personal experience they are quite nice cars to drive even in this day and age.... I wonder will he reminisce with his kids about the day he drove a Birney car????

Nice thread, nice pictures too - thanks "themole". I have learnt quite a lot - I thought trams were just powered from overheads, and I was going to ask about "conduit car" but later on the answer is in another post. Compressed air ? - I bet someone has modelled one
