Boiler work required- who to use?

Hi all,

It looks like I'm going to get a GRS gauge 3 pannier tank locomotive. Now this could be the death of me as they are a bit of a pig to build. Anyway one issue is the boiler has no way of topping up while in steam. Now I haven't got the engine yet but I'm hoping that a water top up valve could be fitted some how. It may need a new bush in the boiler or maybe some kind of Tee piece made on an existing out put to the pressure gauge. It may not even be possible. Does anyone know of anyone who might undertake this kind of work?

Thanks

Simon.

Not familiar with this loco but how is the boiler filled initially ? This would be the best place to fit one.
Wouldn't recommend interfering with the boiler as this would affect its integrity.
Have a look at these

Maxitrak in Staplehurst in Kent, Do Boiler work
Primary 3.5, 5 and 7.25 gauge, but will do smaller

Rhos Helyg Loco Works who posts on here may undertake the work you describe, it could be worth sending him a PM on the subject as he could advise you of someone who could undertake the work if he couldn't

Mike Darby at Chuffed2bits does boiler work, anything up to a made to measure boiler. Has a small metal turning lathe and does a nice line in bayonet fitting filler valves. Charges c£40 per hour for bespoke work. No financial connection, just a happy customer.

I'm unfamiliar with this particular model but I assume the common solution applied to many models of replacing the filler plug with a filler valve would work.
I don't envisage any problem obtaining a suitable valve once you have the plug to determine details of its thread.
I respectfully suggest you go ahead and build the chassis up and, if possible, get it running on air. Should you encounter any problems with this and elect to obtain professional help said professional should be able to provide the filler valve at the same time as any other work.

Thanks for all the info.

I'm aware of all the issues with this kit and it really is the only option for a gauge 3 live steamer. I belong to the gauge 3 society so should be able to get help along the way. Seems daft not to fit a top up valve in this day and age. Worse case would be to loose the pressure gauge.

I'm tempted to get someone to build all the body work been a while since I've done brass etch kits but could be a interesting challenge.
