Changing the volume setting on a brand new LGB Harz 2-10-2

I’ve just bought a new LGB Harz 2-10-2 and the volume is at maximum. On opening the smoke box door to turn down the volume i found the volume dial missing.

Question. Can the sound volume be changed with a cv code in this instance? With all the faffing about sending product to Germany this would be simpler and a lot quicker.

The LGB factory is setting all the various sounds on max volume (255) on the Marklin MSD3 decoders. For example, I just received a brand new LGB 25556 Ontario SD40 Diesel from Marklin USA that I had ordered for a customer and tested it on my DCC test stand. The operating sounds (CV139) were so loud that they drown out the horn and bell sounds which were also at their max volume (255). So I first tried reducing the volume on the operating sounds to 200, still too loud, and then to 150, which was about right.........horn and bell clearly heard now and the operating sounds were sufficiently loud enough. I've had to do this also on a new set of the F7A Santa Fe Diesels so the horn and bell could be clearly heard.

Ok changing CV’s a bit tricky to describe so I will give you the key things to get you going.
1st look in the manual, it describes the process quite well.
2 You will need a programming track, if you have not got one a spare length of track or test rollers will do.
3 There are 4 wire exits in the plug at the rear of the dimax, 2 go to the program track.
4 You can change Cv’s using the handset so that is what to look for in the manual.
5 Key thing about using the handset is that the screen changes as you do things.
6 The part you look for is at the bottom of the display, press Mene and you will see the 3 part thing change to give you different options. This is the way you get to be able to both read and update Cv’s
7 Use this option to get familiar with just reading cv’s before you start to do any changes.

My Massoth is somewhat out of date now so I cannot guide you much further but the above principles should get you to where you want to be.

DiMAX Central Station 1210z
Laney - This supplements what Dunnyrail provided you for the newer 2.4GHz version of the Navigator. From your main screen, use M3 to access the Main Menu screen, use M1 to drop the cursor down to the Decoder Progr. line, press OK M2 to brings up the Loco Address/Speed Steps/Direction/Analog/Digital screen and then press M1 to bring up the CV Read + Prog screeen, then press OK M2 to drop the cursor down to the CV-Nr. line and put in the CV number you want to read or write using the key pad. Then press OK M2 to bring the cursor down to the Value: line. If you want to Read the CV, then press M1; if you want Write the CV, use the key pad to enter the setting you want, then press OK M2 and it will write the value you've entered into the decoder. In both Read and Write process, after you press either M1 or M2, the locomotive will jump slightly back and forth on your programming track which means the decoder is accepting the command sent.

If you need any further assistance, you can email me at: olddominionrailways@gmail.com

Good luck!

Were you able to use your Navigator to set the sound volume?
