CHEAP KIT BASHING FOR TOBY THE TRAM

An outstanding bit of surgery there!
Looks very nice.

Well done

Very nice transformation! Toby who? ;D

TOBY OR NOT TOBY.....THAT IS THE QUESTION.......
(With apologies to Wm Wobblelance, sorry, Shakespeare)

Was this the solid chunk of plastic Bachmann Toby? Thats a definite improvement :o

It certainly was. The only thing to be careful with is using a fine razor saw to remove the windows and the "Doors" - a bit tedious but OK as long as you did not saw into the lugs which held the screws to the body. Other than that it was a matter of cutting planks to fill in Toby's face, and fitting a false floor and bulkhead. All of this can be done from one sheet of styrene card. One thing to note is that I made the floor one plank higher than the original Toby, and painted the chassis black below that line. It make s the model's dimensions appear more accurate.

Regards,

You have made a good job it is a shame that Bachmann did not do that instead of a over priced box for kid's it would be good to see new new blood in the hobby.
Graham Shrewsbury.

Was intending to buy one of these when they came out but didn't bother when I saw the actual product, having decided that it would be easier to scratchbuild one that looked "right" instead.

Having seen your results, I may now reconsider my options!

Very nice indeed.
Definitely better than the "toy" one.
Have a brand new one sitting on the shelf with the intention of removing the face and Air Brushing to make it look "more real"
Good to see what you have done and will keep your mods in mind......

Much better.

Much better.

The model is also better with the doors and windows removed even if it's kept as Toby the Tram Engine. I've also added a boiler which can be glimpsed through the side windows. Toby's also got a smoke unit and sound card.

I would love to do the same thing, myself! Could you give me some details on how you managed this? He looks fantastic!

Have a look at my blog at sandwellvalleyrailway.blogspot.co.uk and have a look at the posts for January and February 2015 where you will see how I did the conversion. Hope it answers your questions.
