Completely new to Live Steam!!

Hi everyone,

I have decided to take the plunge and go into having Live steam locos. I have been doing a bit of research and have decided I really like the look of the Pearse Earl 0-6-0T and Pearse J.B.Earle 2-6-4T. What I need and idea of is what a fair price to pay for each of these is. I have sourced the following detail on what they would have costed brand new

* The Earl was £2330.
* J.B Earle was £2565.

If anyone could give me an idea how much i can expect to pay for each of these second hand it would be great.

Thanks

Karen :)

The first task you have is finding them second hand. Not many J.B Earle's were made and Pearse Earls are few and far between on the market although more were produced. Now price, seeing as neither are produced by pearse they both have a 'collectors' value. For a J.B.Earle in good condition expect to pay near the new value(if not over it!). for an Earl I would say you wont see one for much less than £1,500

There was a Pearse Earl/Countess in fully lined green for sale in the December edition of Garden Rail, described as in very good 'showroom' condition. Seller wanted £1400. I cannot remember ever seeing a second hand J.B. Earle for sale.

Hi there,

You may want to look at accucraft. They do a model of 'The Earl' as well, but much cheaper. But as a beginner to steam, I'd maybe look at some of their more basic loco's.

There is also an unlined black Pearse Earl for sale in the latest issue of Garden Rail. The seller does not say how much he wants for it though.

On the other hand, if you can afford it why not get what you really want? Pearse locos are nicely made and straightforward to operate. If you do change your mind in the future I doubt you would lose much if you re-sell. The Pearse version does have a different look from the Accucraft.

Hi Karen, welcome to this site. for what its worth I have never seen a J.B.Earle for sale either , so on the off chance your choice's are based on knowledge of someone selling one I would say go for it. I know nothing about which Earl is the better model but I think the Accucraft looks better. I'm sure some one will give you a more in depth answer as to their comparative qualities. Which ever way you decide to go I'm sure you will not regret it.
Its been mentioned often that you should be cautious when buying second hand steam loco's if you do not know & trust the owner,or have someone who can sort it out if its a mess, much as when buying a second hand car.
Cheers Garry

The price was £1500, but it is sold.

I think it would be a safer bet to purchase a new Accucraft.The quality is superb and they are from the same stable as Pearse.A second hand one can be dodgy especially if they have been using the wrong oil and water.Accucraft are excellent locos but have the silly stigma of being made in China.
