De-blinging a Caradoc

Would you believe it? I've just been sent the electronic verion of this month's Garden Rail and Tag's excellent editorial is all about de-blinging live steamers... and guess what I've been doing for the past 2 days?

Yep, just that!

It started when I found that I had a match to the paint used on the Caradoc (Phoenix Pricision 'P108 BR Maroon (Dull)' ) so I could paint the dome at long last. From there I found some Meccano bits and a brass wheel to replace the plastic regulator and gas valve knobs - and I even found I had a tin of cream paint! I will be reversing the spectacle plates (as Tag suggested) and pianting the reversing quadrant.
I think she'l look rather good when I've finished.

I love em.......

Going off at a tangent..
I've just taken off the smokebox prior to painting it matt black and was wondering if anyone knew what that bolt is for on the right hand side? You can see it on Hobo's photo just in front of the water tank. On my example, it's just a bolt that goes through the metal and appears to do naff all.
I'm going to remove it and replace it with a tap/valve detail.

Definitely anti- bling here- this pair have both passed through my grubby mits...

Hi Tom,I think it holds the inner smokebox in place.

Am just completing an article on the de-bling process. Yours is coming along nicely...

The story so far...

Does my bum look big in this? :rolf:

I had this terrible urge to give it a coal bunker as well as a de-bling and this is the result. Does it make it look too long at the back or do you think I could get away with it?

My metalwork skills don't run to curvey stuff, so I had to keep it square. I didn't want to make it shallow because then it would look a bit like window box.

A good looking piece of work that adds character and individuality.

If you really have to keep it square at the bottom I'd be tempted to extend the frames and make the buffer beam line up with the rear of the bunker.
