I'm intrigued by the wheelsets on the cattle wagon, anybody seen these before, plastic wheels with thick metal axle to give a bit of weight.
Yes.
I still have a few on wagons purchased from Beatties in Nottingham in the mid 1970s

a good buy kim!:thumbup::thumbup:

The exposed axle wheelsets were used up until circa-1978. They had overly large flanges. Also available up until then was the plastic covered axle model, also with oversize flanges. In 1978 the more common 'L' type wheel that we know today was released.
Regardless of values given in old 'collector' books, these early cars are actually worth less than later more common models. I sold off heaps of late 1960's/early 1970's models in mint as new condition and was disappointed with the lack of intrerest in these early, supposedly collector cars.

Nice assortment. Yes - I have a few axles like that acquired on second hand vehicles.
Me too, on some 2nd hand vehicles.

But I updated them with the more modern version of the hook and loop (by swapping out the axle trucks) and metal wheels....

nice cars youve found kim-really nice-i like them all
particularly like the DRG reefer

i understand the only way to have modern couplers on those is to replace the old trucks with new trucks

shouldnt be too difficult to find brake stands and brake wheels
might smear the axels with a bit or oil fiml-i understand they will rust
