I use masking tape stuck to styrene with thin cyano (Thanks Jack Thompson) Here is a bashed Bachmann ET&WNC type caboose, sorta Colorado type. The Masking tape gives a nice canvas-like texture, 2 inch wide strips, start at the ends and work towards the middle.

Don't run it in the damp tho :)

thats a fine looking bit of work submarine GG1 commander ! LOL

good idea

heres one i have used, since i never thought of masking tape
i use either cigarette rolling paper or tissue paper cut in strips and
then dope them with flat clear paint, heavily-crinkles rather nicely, but subtlely
holds up pretty well in the elements too -works well down to n scale!

have also used 220 grit water proof sandpaper with plastic backing -which works well in the elements-looks about perfect, as is, too
dust and chalk it up for a bit more weathering and interest

i use scotch 776 spray contact adhesive to both surfaces for instant and unmovable (unadjustable ) adhesion-also works great so long as you get it perfect the first go

the masking tape sounds like a good idea -yours is nery nicely tucked under the roof edges -very clean lines
