Fitting the glass on a water gauge.

Help, please!
I'm fitting a water gauge to my Regner Max and have worked out the way to install it but hit a problem with sealing the glass tube. What's the best stuff to use? I'll also need to shorten the glass and haven't a clue how to do that either (well, not a guaranteed way without smashing it to bits in the process  which I probably would do!)
Crossed fingers that someone can help.

Old Tom,

I use silicone tubing cut 2 to 3mm wide and a snug push fit over the glass tube. To cut the glass score with a sharp file all the way round and place the scored mark on a matchstick or the like on a hard flat surface to make a clean break. Do not overtighten the gland nuts but pinch up if you have a small leak.

John.
