Hello All,

As a newbie who has been following the forum for a good while now, I have a couple queries which I hope some of you experts can help me with.

At last I have the bare bones of the track laid for the Grange & Droppingwell Colliery Railway and have today test run my second hand Edrig, for the first time, which I purchased on evilbay a couple of years ago.

As I have been running the steel tyre part of the front wheels has come loose from the brass centres. I have tried to fix them back with two part epoxy without sucess, as they came loose again once evrything warmed up.

Could anyone tell me how I can refix the steel tyres, your help would be much appreciated.

Also, is there such a thing as a maintenance manual for the Edrig, I would like to be able to strip her down and clean everything etc. etc..

All hail Ferret, welcome to the Forum! May I suggest you use Loctite 601 to fix back your wheel tyres. It should be good to well above the temperatures experienced at the wheels. You will need to make sure that all touching surfaces are completely clean of any oil. The best thing for that is some methelated spirits, wipe it over at least twice and when dry apply the Loctite sparingly and hold everything in the right spot for a few minutes for an initial set, wipe off the excess, and then leave overnight for a full cure, before using.

No there is not not a manual for the Edrig, They are however easy to strip down and if you want to do this I will list how to do it for you. If however you just want to clean your Edrig then you do not need to strip down. Because there is no ferrous metal on this locomotive it is easy to deep clean cos nothing will rust. Indeed because I have a coal fired version I do it after every run. Buy a can of spray degreaser from a motor factor and attack everything below the running plate with this. You can also do so above the running plate, particularly if there is oil on the footplate.After letting it soak for ten mins, give the running gear a good go with your paintbrush. Clean with your garden hose set to 'jet' and leave to drip dry. I usually do this overnight and indoors over newspaper. In the morning turn your locomotive over and place a drop of motor oil on every joint moving part on the valve and running gear.

if you wish to dismantle then I will do you a list....

It would be great if you could do me a list so that I can dismantle, hope this will help me to get to understand the inner workings etc..

Just to let you know, I read Garden Rail every month and this has spurred me on to build my small layout.

OK I will hunt out a couple of pics later but will start with the list.

Remove bodyshell ? two screws on the front baseplate of each side tank. A screw each side of the forrard end of the door ? if you look straight down you will see them.
Main bodyshell can now be removed.
Remove the back sheet (four screws.
Turn loco on its side and look under the smokebox end for the four screws securing the smoke box.
Undo and remove smokebox.

You will see the manifold for the cylinders connecting with the main steam pipe through the boiler. For removal of everything you need to separate steampipe and manifold connection. You will need two suitably sized spanners or you may twist off the pipe.
Disconnect the linkage from the reversing quadrant at the front end of the link. Remove the two screws from the front of the running plate just behind the bufferbeam and one either side of the boiler on the running plate. You have already removed the back two by removing the backsheet. Lift off the runningplate boiler, burner, gas tank etc etc as one.
Note, on the regulator piston valve and the two cylinder piston vales a small scribed line. This is for timing the locomotive ? but you don't need to demolish the beast for this. The MAIN reason for removing up to now is if there is a weep between the steam chests and the cylinders. If this is the case the four crosshead screws on top of each steam chest can be nipped up slightly ? just as you would with a car cykinder head ? ei doing up the screws diagonally opposite each other rather than going round clickwise. If there is not a weep between chests and cylinders then really, I would none of the above! The timing can be done without removing anything (and I can let you have a couple of notes on this) and a 'chuffpipe' can be added without even removing the smokebox. A good thing to add to these engines (apart from cosmetic improvements) is, without doubt, a resonator whistle. You will have to drill three holes in the spectacle plate using a template ? but it adds immeasurably to running pleasure ? well it does for me anyway. A steam locomotive should have a whistle! Hope this helps.
