G Scale to Germany

I recently sold some stuff via the forum to a member in Germany and he had to pay import duties. Specifically what are you trying to find out?

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I was interested in what I could expect to pay in import duties on goods (rolling stock and control) as a percentage befoe I place an order to England.

I think the German recipient paid about 19% of the vale of the goods in customs fees and taxes. There are a variety of online calculators that will give you a figure, e.g. Calculate Import Duties & Taxes to Germany | Easyship

It may be possible for the sender to pay them in advance but I couldn't work out how and my recipient was happy enough to pay them on receipt. If you're buying from a store it may be worth asking them if they have any experience.

If you are buying from a UK business that is VAT registered, then they should deduct the 20% UK VAT from the price when they ship it to Germany. You will then pay the 19% German VAT when it arrives, plus a fixed fee to the post or courier.
There shouldn't be any import duties, it will just be the VAT. I would suggest you talk to the seller first and make sure they understand that they should deduct it for you - most reputable companies will know what they should do.

If you are buying from a very small business that is not registered for VAT, or from a private individual, then there won't be any deduction from the price but you will still probably have to pay the German VAT.

Thank you! Very much appreciated.
