Getting started

Hi guys,

I recently took delivery of my first live steamer, a roundhouse silver lady, but so far I've not had much luck getting it to run.

I was just wondering if anybody had any links to YouTube vids/websites that would help me get going?

Cheers
Rob

So what´s the problem. Getting it lit, getting steam up and sufficient pressure, or something else?

This video shows a first time steamup of a Lady Anne, same as a Silver Lady . Has two parts to the video , have a look and see if this doesn't help.

The above link is for the first part, second part is in the side bar on the right.

Have two Roundhouse models, Old Colonial and a Katie . both a great pleasure to run. The Old Colonial is 28 years old and runs like new even now. I am the second owner.

Where in the world are you Rob?

Maybe there's someone local who you could visit with your engine?

I have a Lady Anne (I built it as a kit model) - Happy to help out if your anywhere near Preston, Lancashire

Hi Rob,

Perhaps if you describe what's happening and where you are getting stuck? There is little that has not been experienced by the members on this forum so we should be able to help!

Regards

Daniel

Hi guys,
Thanks for the replies, and the video link.

Basically I'm struggling to fill the gas tank properly (I think).

If I "fill" it and put the gas on low then it runs out before getting steam up, but if I put the gas on higher the loco builds steam nicely, starts to blow off and becomes pretty much uncontrollable (it's RC) and runs out of gas after about 5-10 mins.

I'm in Liverpool btw.

Cheers
Rob

First question, and then I´ll let others follow.

Are you sure that the gas tank is full. Do you fill it until it blows back through the valve?

Hi Rob,
There are at least two more of us Robs in Liverpool and we're both experienced live steamers. Why not pop round with your Lady Anne and I'm sure we can sort it out?

;) You know, that's the beauty thing about this forum, people helping people.... long may it continue :)

Rob, a good idea might be to join the 16 mm NGM society or a local model engineering society who have facilities for 45/32 mm gauged locos. Join in with one of the 16 mm NGM local area groups and go to their regular "steam ups". Learnt it all that way, and on here.

I started out like you lost and confused having been sent on my way by the retailer with a cheery wave and the comment "oh you'll get the hang of it in no time". Put me off running the thing for 6 months until a kind soul took pity on me...........also put me off ever buying another live steamer from that retailer. Others have followed though ;)

Max.

Rob,
As a fellow scouser you might be interested in our local Mersey & West Lancs Area Group (MAWLAG) of the 16mm NGM Association.
We have frequent steam-ups around Liverpool.

You don't HAVE to be a 16mm member, but it's recommended.
Drop me a PM and we'll arrange a get-together with our knowledge base to help with your Silver Lady.

The gas tanks do take a quite a bit of gas and Ronson valves are a bit disconcerting at first as some gas does leek out when filling, more so if you are using a gas adapter than a plastic ended lighter gas can. You need to fill until liquid gas comes out that boils away almost straight away.
