Ok, this is for guys that are involved with the portable steam layouts at the shows. Would any of your designs, withstand being out in the weather between shows as a home layout? If scenery was kept to minimum, live plants in pots and the buildings done as if for a normal garden railway. I am looking for ideas to keep it lightweight, tollerant of live steam and typical outdoor weather during the warmer months of the year(I would take it down before the snow and brutal cold settle in). Track will be LGB(have plenty on hand already), single track with passing sidings and a yard with steam up area. Will use radius 3 curves as well. Mike

Been thinking of the very same for a long time. Needs to be able to be sectioned and withstand fence panels hitting it. Plus the cat.

An all-metal, alloy or galvanised, portable layout that can be left outdoors all-year round, IMO, defeats the need to be portable. Do you mean to put it up in your back yard and leave it there until you want to take it someplace else and show it?

Loewes/Home Depot have some very handy lightweight trestles made of plastic - Stanley Tool Co, make some too. Flat boards laid on them would make an easily dismountable layout.

Have you looked at any of the layouts seen at the usual shows? Depending on where you are located...The York PA show, Diamondhead, that kind of thing.

Here in UK we have a couple of lightweight portable tracks - one of them can be configured to suit the venue, and can be as big as 20x40 or as small as 20x15. It's made of wood and simply bolts together with folding legs with adjustable feet. the small is about 14x12 and does not resize - but it's built in the same manner as the larger one.

If you like I can try and find some movie of either.
