Good for Nothing!

The last time I went to B&Q, some broken air blocks were on a pallet in the car park marked "FREE". Which I thought was a very good price! :)
Lucky I'd gone in the van - I brought a little stack home, because I'd seen peoples results at carving buildings out of them, but I'd always fancied a little experiment.
So, you take one of these.....

....a cheap (mine's from Poundland) one of these.....

......cut slices - it really is easier than sawing timber!!

......scribe (I used an old screwdriver, but a nail will do) and voila!

Simples!
These are a bit "rough'n'ready" trial pieces I knocked up to see if the idea would work

Great work. I have used these blocks and found them pretty useful. They are not waterproof and the frost will slowly eat into them. A brick waterproofer is a good idea.

Oi cat theres nothing wrong with little saws!!!!!! (youll have to find the pix coz i carnt)

Just had a look Edward and cant finf the pic

I have those blocks, the saw I use is a 'Hardpoint' saw with big teeth much larger than normal saws

Here is a link to one from Screwfix that is the same sort of saw.

They can be cut with a normal saw but the large teeth versions work much better. Markr the block all the way round it with a srewdriver drawn across the block (prederable an old one) the cut to the line.

Another thing that you can do with the blocks is to put some relief into them. I make a sloppy mix of cement - Loads if water to about 1:1 sand cement. Apply it with a small cheep disposable (Poundshop?) kids paint brush just within the scribed lines. You can then do a wash with some Wicks Cement Colour and just enjoy your creation. Bit time consuming but what a transfornation it will make. Sorry no pics, I did all of this at a friends line that I will not be visiting till after May.
