Harzerbahnen coach true colours

Railways, Cars, Wine!
Does anyone out there know what the nearest true colour to the harz coaches is and if its easily available. Both the maroon, and the cream/ivory. The LGB 'red' looks too red, and too bright to me. Is anything closer available in rattle can or little pot?

Ta in advance.

Almost looks like the old 'Custard and Cream' BR coach livery to my eyes Alec?

I agree that the LGB coaches look far too bright red....

It does to me too, and possibly even slightly darker in the red department. But being part colour blind, I have difficulties colour matching!

According to a German HSB modelling site the correct RAL codes are 1014 for the cream and 3004 for the red, if that helps.

Yes it does!
Many thanks

Interesting question this and Im sure Chris`s colours are right, but it depends on how you look at it. Yes the LGB coachs are a bit too red and a bit too cream, but if you catch a coach thats just been repainted there not too far off, however most of the coachs have been up the Brocken a few thousand times and get covered in soot, ash and anything else that usually comes out a steam engine thats working hard. The red then appears more maroon because of the dots of black soot and ash that sticks to the side of them. Therefor a more maroon colour is probably about right. To my eyes Trainline coachs are probley got the colour the closest (the maroon versions not the red ones) Heres a shot of my railway last summer.

Nemo's comments are right on the Button. The colours are all over the place when you look around in Wernigrode and the Selktalbahn. Just look at any Vid of the Harz lines and you will see differing colours.

As an aside, in the old site there was a thread about converting/repainting Newquid Coaches to the Harz Colour Scheme. The colours used were I believe Halfords Rattle Cans and the specs stated.

Now if only I could find my saved posts I could help with a link.

I visited the railway in 2011 and clearly remember the two shades of red used. I don't think that the darker colour was due to weathering, although the climate is harsh. I do have a photo of part of a coach on which the lighter red is applied but a "no smoking" vinyl on the end of this vehicle has a maroon background panel.

Well having just got an App that resizes Pics I thought that I would try it out here to show some Harz Colours. Note the muck on the Coaches in the Station. On Westertor Shed are varying shades.

I know this is daft, but can anyone remember the INTERIOR colours of the Harz coaches, inside roof, sides, floor, seat upholstery, etc???

I am pretty sure that LGB have this right, I have a picture of a friend taken in a HSB Coach on a Red Seat. On anther picture of the Old Traditional Set, one of the Green Bogie Coaches has Light Varnished Wood on the interior. If my memory is in order I think that it had slated wooden seats as well.

Take a visit to the Harz and see for yourself if you can, you will not regret it.

This is the inside of a red and cream coach. I think the walls are plastic laminate and the seats are cloth. Many of the seats were PVC.

Many thanks Alan, that's just what I needed. I couldn't believe that I didn't have an interior shot when I looked through my photos!

John, we went to the Harz in October this year, but not a single interior shot did I take.
I am hopefully Going back again in February 2014, going by train all the way from Attleborough via Eurostar Brussels, Koln, Hannover, to Wernigerode train all the way. Might need to hire a car in Wernigerode for a couple of days, but seems there are three car hire places in that industrial estate off to the right as you come in from the autobahn.

I'll need a taxi from the station to the hotel as I might be a bit knackered by then. I want to do the footplate ride up the Brocken, but I can't seem to get anyone in the harzerbahnen office to answer an email, not even one with a google translation to German (although god knows what the translation was like, initially it translated "cab ride" to get a taxi!)
The joys of auto translation!
I'll try phoning them tomorrow!

Nice photo Alan / Bruce. Who's the good looking guy looking through the door window?...... :D :D :D
