Hi All

apologies if I havent done something right, I am new here. Im interested in getting my first basic set while we are in lockdown and have been looking around for a while now. I came across this one on ebay and thought it might be worth a punt. So my question is, do you guys think this is a good bit of kit, and how much should I be preparedto pay for it if others are bidding

link below

Thanks

kevin

So, it's about 22 years old and looks as though it has been kept indoors most of its life - rails still look bright and clean sleepers. Loco looks complete with no broken parts and the wheel condition, the ones you can see, are clean and bright so perhaps has seen little use. Note it is a simple DC (Direct Current/Direct Control) model so if you see yourself going down the DCC route from the get go then you may want to go for one of that type instead. But then you can upgrade your kit to DCC (Digital Command and Control) at a later stage if that turns out the way you want to develop your passion. Me, I'm firmly in the DC camp, KISS. And battery and live steam - the bug bit here 17 years ago, beware ! Here is another one that sold a couple of weeks ago to give you an idea of its market value. LGB 71968 | eBay

LGB starter sets are always a good place to get into the hobby. A good standardized set of track components from a manufacturer that set the benchmark and standards for the whole hobby and as a result are compatible with a number of other makes of track systems and products to run on it. If it floats your boat probably worth a punt but don't get carried away with your bidding. Max. P.S. Welcome to the forum Kevin. :)

Hullo and welcome Kevin.

I would say yes!

A Stainz loco and 4 wagons plus track and controller is definitely worth the money.

If you do get it, I'll send you the missing track piece for postage.

Short straights and R1 curves are around £3 second hand if you look around or ask here....

Hello Kevin,
Welcome to the Forum..

The set Max pointed to, did not have track, or a transformer, so the set you are looking at will go for a higher price.
How much is it worth? - Unfortunately, on evilBay, the answer is what someone will pay for it.

A brand new set will cost best-part of £350 but don't offer anything like that for a secondhand set!

Whereabouts in England are you? If you are not successful with this eBay lot then there are one or two here who could probably help set you up with a simple system.

As others have said starter sets are an ideal entry point for the hobby. Don't be put off by it not being digital/DCC even if you go down that road eventually you will always need a basic analog setup. All that is missing is a fish plate, heaven knows how that got lost as they are not easy to remove accidentally! If you go for this and win I'd be happy to post you a couple for nothing. If you like the loco and trucks go for it, but I wouldn't bid more than about £200, much beyond that and you could get a brand new PIKO starter set which are same sort of quality and totally compatible.

Welcome Kevin, my advice is take the advice of what's been said above!! a LGB stuff is pretty robust, so if you find you enjoy the hobby the set would probably stay with you for ever

The 30th anniversary used set in the USA runs for more than $200 now (there is one on US ebay for over $300 and improperly advertised as having sound and smoke which this set never had). Original set used 3 straight tracks on 2 cars for a load.
I have this set, it was my first back in 1999 and was $140 US currency.
