Hooks for chain couplings

Hi,

I am thinking of taking the coupling off some of my LGB rolling stock and fitting hook and chain couplings.

Where do I buy hooks from for this purpose, or is it possible to buy small curtain hooks and adapt them?

Kind regards,

Dave

Are you talking about the safety chain hooks like those fitted to the Accucraft W&L rolling stock Dave? If so, I buy mine from Cambrian Models (look in the 16mm narrow gauge section). However, these are plastic, so I'm not sure if they'll be strong enough for what your after?

Chain from B&Q / Castorama (in France), buy it by the metre length, and hooks can also be bought there. Try the kitchen and curtain area. Also a very good source of pole in Brass / Ally / Plastic ideal and far far cheaper than model shops.:thumbup::thumbup: Alyn

Brandbright, GRS and Roundhouse all sell white metal centre buffers with hooks that fit onto the standard LGB coupling mount arm.

Go to a shop that sells beading supplies, they usually have a good range of hooks and chain.

You have to be careful that they are strong enough.
I buy these brass 'hook eyes' at the hardware store and nip a piece out with pliers as shown.

Dave,
I've done the same as Gregh with some of my conversions.
If using the white metal buffers, some of the cheaper hooks can break off when screwing into the buffer.
The chain in Gregh's photo shows what I was trying to draw in my eMail - use an odd number.

Ordinary curtain hooks can be screwed into the LGB buffer above the loop coupler:-

I use these coupler pockets with a fishing swivel or an oval link between wagons.
The advantage of fishing swivels are 1. easily available, 2.universal lateral movement and 3. if the wagons fall over usually only one goes over so it reduces the domino effect.
?
I get them from a guy called Pasidump in Sri Lanka

Andel models makes some centre dumb buffers complete with hooks.

I have a couple of spares which I bought for something else and don't need.

PM me :callme::callme:

Got some of Pasidump's coupler pockets on my smaller 16mm stuff.
Also got a lot of Andel buffers. The underslung hooks & chains are pretty good.
Recently bought some Swift Sixteen buffers to try out.

I usually reserve 45mm stock for visiting other lines.
My steam locos have IP Eng's Darj type dumb buffers, which CAN couple to LGB if the height is a perfect match.
The chain provides secondary reassurance, and allows other locos to haul the train.

Or if you're talking about fitting 3 link couplings, I just buy some suitably thick wire, drill a hole to superglue it into and bend it into a hook shape with a pair of narrow nosed pliers.
as opposed to Big Nose :rolf:

If it's screw eyes you're after Jackson's Miniatures sell them in three sizes, 1.5mm, 2mm and 3mm inside diameter. All are 10mm long. They are priced at 6p each, but I'm sure you'll get a discount if you mention G Scale Central.
We also sell bronzed, brass chain.

If you use the GRS or ( much better) Brandbright centre buffers you will have to cut the plastic dummy buffer off as it will get in the way of the hook.
