How is this thing powered?

My grandfather passed away and I inherited a few trains and a track. I'm trying to set up the Aristo-craft 1225 North Pole RR. But I can't figure out how this thing is powered. If it's battery powered I can't find anywhere to put the batteries. And none of the boxes have any wires or anything to attach to the track. Perhaps I am missing something. I have never messed with anything like this, so sorry if this is a stupid question.

Found this for the 0-4-0 switcher it is based on:

Aristo 0-4-0 Switcher

The Aristo-Craft 0-4-0 Switcher is a live steam locomotive model, designed to resemble the Pennsylvania Railroad A5 Class switcher. It is a compact, rugged, and powerful engine, suitable for industrial districts or small layouts.

Key Features

  1. Working Headlights: The locomotive features working headlights, adding to its realism.
  2. Detailed Cab Interior: The cab interior is detailed, providing a authentic look and feel.
  3. Working Knuckle Couplers: The engine comes equipped with working knuckle couplers, allowing for smooth coupling and uncoupling of cars.
  4. Smoke Generator: The locomotive features a smoke generator, driven by an air pump in the left cylinder, which puffs smoke in time with the drivers.
  5. Power Pickup: The engine has a unique power pickup system, which can be improved by wiring the tender across to the loco, adding eight more wheels of power pickup.

Common Issues and Solutions

  1. Dirty Wheels: The 0-4-0’s wheels can get dirty quickly, affecting its performance. Aristo has addressed this issue with a wheel change, using the same process as the wheels on their ball-bearing truck diesel bricks.
  2. Stiff Air Pump: The air pump can be stiff when new, causing the engine to run unsteadily at low speed. However, it will loosen up after a few hours of running.
  3. Sound System: The sound system relies on the Aristo PWC system to work properly. Without PWC, the sound system may produce unpleasant noises.

Upgrades and Modifications

  1. Kadee Couplers: Kadee #831 couplers can be mounted directly in place of the supplied Aristo knuckle coupler, with some modification.
  2. Wheel Installation: Aristo recommends removing the boiler and cab to access the wheels for installation. Be careful not to damage wires leading to the smoke unit and headlight.

Overall Performance

The Aristo-Craft 0-4-0 Switcher is a capable and realistic model, suitable for small to medium-sized layouts. With proper maintenance and occasional cleaning of the wheels, it can provide smooth and quiet operation. However, some users have reported issues with the air pump and sound system, which can be addressed with modifications and upgrades.

Picture of this helps
Definitely track powered.

Some people make connections to track without using factory made connectors.

You'll need an 18v transformer/speed controller. If you don't have any plans for expansion, a basic LGB controller will suffice. The LGB part number with a UK plug for 240v AC is 50083 - not sure what it would be for US mains power.
