Many of us have bought or been tempted to buy these cheaper LGB lookalikes. I recently acquired a pair of 3-plank wagons, similar to LGB 42610, for £35. There are differences, such as the quality of the plastic and the quality of construction, and the lack of detail such as handrails. I have attached two photos of "before and after" showing what was achieved for around £3.
I sprayed the inside of the wagon matt black to reduce the translucency of the plastic and fitted 12 handrails from 2mm plastic rod, together with a brake stand. I decided too to make it appropriate for my line so I printed RhB decals on waterslide paper to cover the "OB" lettering.
Whatever we may think about cheap Chinese imports ( as opposed to expensive imports ?) the LGB item costs between £85 and £115.
I think the work I have done makes a difference.
Let me know if you do.

Cheers

Not yet. I think some metal ones will add about £14 to the cost, so still over £30 overall cheaper than LGB. You do get whhat you pay for, but sometimes you can make reasonable compromises and save money, plus, of course, the satisfaction of making improvements.

And a few more Shhhhhhh :rolf:

I bought two of these wagons to convert to 32mm.
In the end, I converted one but haven't got round to doing the other.
Re-gauging was easy, making the flanges smaller wasn't on the to do list until I tried it on some Peco track!
Apart from that, I wouldn't have dreamed of paying the LGB prices only to butcher them!

Bought one of those box vans in the summer.
With the aid of some metal wheels, stickers and a tin of silver paint....Applied to the roof, doors and side vents

But at least i have removed the bodies off the wagons now..

Tony, you have made a very nice job with the 'Waterslide Decals' we have not had any joy with various types. A couple of questions:-
1- What was and who supplied the the Decal Stationary please?
2- What sort of Printer did you use?
JonD

Oh h
That is actually 3 qustions!

They really are great kit bash material, what I've done is mounted the van body on to the bogie wagon chassis an created some unique bogie open wagons

And with some metal wheels as well, they can be made into good wagons.

I will post photos of my wagons when I get a chance

Happy new year !
I use an HP Inkjet printer, printing onto WHITE decal paper supplied through the Internet by Mr Decalpaper
It is described as "INKJET WATERSLIDE DECAL PAPER WHITE A4 MDPWHTIWDP" if you look on ebay.
I have used other brands but with varying success - the clear paper is thinner and fine on light backgrounds, but for darker backgrounds you need the WHITE paper. The only trouble I have found with some WHITE papers is that they are quite thick and it is more like a vinyl.
However, this Mr Decalpaper is very good and fairly thin.
I do use Humbrol Decalfix to help the transfers adhere, and a coat of spray varnish afterwards to help durability.
Attached is a photo of my Budd RDC which I repainted from Red and Silver to Aluminium and then scanned the B&M transfers for the front.

As a paid up member of Newqida Anonymous.
Take a Newqida tanker chassis, stretch it add a cheap LGB RhB body and some LGB steps and you have yourself an improvised container wagon. They do spray up good and with metal wheels don't run too badly.

and fitted 12 handrails from 2mm plastic rod,
How did you do such a nice job of the 90deg curves in the handrails without crimping or snapping the plastic rod?
Thanks

Ted Tuck, AWRYPres
Invest in one of these - about £18 from Hobbycraft for example, and insert metal pins in the top. You can then bend the rod (GENTLY) around to form a 90-degree angle, then trim off to length, and insert in holes I drilled in the wagon body. It is also a useful tool for holding items for painting or filing. Being free-standing but reasonably sturdy, it doesn't upset SWMBO as I don't need to g-clamp it to the dining-room table !!

I bought one of these excelent value wagons, as well as a pair of the open gondolas. (intending to build a works-train)
I had to remove a drawbar extension from the non-balcony wagon end,
but i did notice that the doors stay shut when rolling. unlike the german stock
I will be changing the wheel sets to get rid of the 'flats'
waiting for the next container load of carriages to arrive .when I shall certainly buy some of the green bogie stock with the varanda ends.

If you mean the green ones with the letters "TB" instead of "DB" then I know somewhere who may have some delivered in the next few weeks. PM me with how many you want/need and I will see what I can do....

Where can I get some of these Newqida wagons from via online?
I am in Aust and they are retailing locally for about $100 for coaches and $68 for wagons plus postage which is the killer making them over $120/ coach.
At that price I may as well go for 2nd hand LGB of ebay but I wouldn't be game to hack an LGB wagon up.

Fresh from Wellington and the Haste stable is the OBB's answer to modern styled goods rolling stock. We have moved forward to create the four wheeled version of some modern four wheeled wagons using the Newquida RHB wagon. In actual fact some ran on the Murtalbahn (and still are) along with some bogie versions (under construction currently). Those with a Schmalspurig book (The OBB Bible) can find them in there. Sadly OBB no longer runs frieght trains according to an old issue of the Depesche mag.

If you want some we have an importer in NZ. They retail for about $90 NZ for the "Saxon" carriages. All the others decrease accordingly. Even with postage and the exchange rate in your favor they are a good price. They have all versions in stock currently. Boxcars, carriages, bogie twin packs and the tank wagons. Mail me seperately and I can give you his address if you want.

I did a 4 wheel van conversion job some time ago........
http://www.gscalecentral.net/Chinese-Surgery-m23367

Worrying thing is that it was over 3 years ago now!!

As promised here the photos of my kit bash,

To do it i did the following:
Remove bogie wagon sides
remove van chassis
trim van body so that it sits perfectly on the bogie chassis
Remove and repostion roof
Glue it all altogther with impact adhesive.

The only downside is that the door no longer opens because you have to trim off the bottom door slider, so Ive had to glue the door on.

Its a quite simple conversion and im currently part way through my second one.

Excellent to see such good transformations of very cheap source of rolling stock. A great way for the folk who want to 'bash' rolling stock and not feel guilty about 'defacing' expensive new kit from other makes or feel that they might be knocking the worth of their LGB kit.

I wish that they did some yank bits as I would be able to 'bash' em about with impunity. (I have done 'bashing' with the usual brands (always bought used) but I always worry while I am doing it...probably down to my skill level, or lack of it.
