Iom Pairs Foot Boards

It says that the lower foot-boards can be removed, but I can't see how, without removing both sets, upper and lower. Am I missing something?

:wondering:

You remove both sets of running boards, and then reinstall the top set omitting the bottom set. It's a bit fiddly and you need just the right size socket! Don't forget to put the bolts back in the holes ;-)

Cheers Martino. The sockets are not a problem. I could see how to remove the full set but not how to separate the upper and lower boards once off, without cutting them.

Ah, I see. Mine just came apart into two separate pieces per side. I have a tendency to undo every bolt I see and worry about putting it back together later. This accounts for the huge box of bits and non working things.

I have now got round to starting this bit of a job (BIT?)

There are 16 screws holding each pair of foot-boards to each SIDE of each coach! That's 32 screws per coach or for me, 160 total. I'm definitely going screwy!!!!!!!

Anyone tackling the same job, be aware. The screws are painted matt black and it doesn't hold on that well. I used a 3 mm nut runner to remove on them. The tip of the day is, pack the nut runner/socket with a bit of paper to stop the nut-runner end rubbing on the brackets, this will stop some damage. the corners of the screw will probably still suffer some so be prepared to touch up after.

To touch up I used a spray can. NO! Not directly on the screws. Spray a little into the corner of the cap and apply with a small brush. It doesn't go on thick and is virtually invisible.

The other thing to watch is that the screws are threaded into what feels to be a resin chassis, the holes are only tapped deep enough for two brackets and you now have only one, so the last few threads are a bit tight. No need to worry, just don't over stress things. The hole is deep enough just not threaded far enough, the screw will manage that by itself, with care.

For those, like me, totally anal about keeping original boxes, there is plenty of room in bottom of the foam inserts for the loose footboards and everything else.

My only complaint would be that the axle-set recesses won't take both sizes of wheel-sets, something I've been complaining about for at least the last six years. Would it be that difficult to sort?

Late edit : - I also had one bracket fall out of a foot board, and one stripped screw (from the factory), and one that failed to restart and chewed the hole a little. I suppose not too bad out of so many.
