Is it just an expensive TORCH?

Any help/advice much appreciated.
Have I bought just an expensive Torch?! Whilst on eBay the other day I entered a bidding war on a Bachmann Big Hauler (produced approx 1990's?). I won. The seller declared the following faults with it "Two offside rods broken". Every thing else (electrics etc ) in good working order. When I received the loco (RC battery operated) I set about repairing the rods (hope I'm using the correct terminology for parts). When I was ready to give the engine a test run I found that there wasn't any RC transmitter with the set (box had a space for it). On contacting the seller they informed me that the sale was on behalf of their late departed Father. They said to the best of their knowlegde it never had a transmitter and worked just fine when their dad was using it some time back in the late 90's-2000's. They also said that they made enquires at their local model train shop. The proprietor told them that Bachmann also produced this model loco without the said transmitter as a variant. Most confusing as my loco's lable has the following info on it's base "RC #90.0100 .49 operates on 49MHZ and will compete with 27MHZ. The loco takes six D Cell batteries which are a snug fit and add a generous weight to it. Power switch works and the front light does exactly what you want it to, it lights up. Nothing else happens, hence my reference to "Just an expensive Torch"
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to obtaining a replacement transmitter thing and while I'm at it a set of replacement rubber bands/tyres for the rear drive wheels as the originals have perished (not supprised hey)? Please be gentle with your comments as I think I should have let this eBay loco pass me by.
Regards (Rob)

Rob let me know the exact wording on the loco regarding the Transmitter. There are two types. I have one around here someplace that you can have for postage if it is the right one.

For your traction tyres i used some tight fitting rubber bands on mine the only problem i had with them was that they were red . Not sure if you know about the sound in the tender a 9v battery goes in the water hatch .

I thought that only one of these frequencies was legal in this country. Is this the Green loco?

Hi Rod,
Many thanks for your quick response and kind offer. Lable on the base of the loco is as: Bachmann Big Hauler RC Receiver #90.0100.49 FCC ID GMM28V90.0100.49
Made in China
This Train #90.0100.49 operates on 49Mhz and can compete with a Train on 27 Mhz.

Rob

Hi Mike,
The colour code for this loco is shown as B&O Royal Blue. However there is a lot of green on the cab and tender. Which frequency is legal in the UK?

Rob

Yup, got one here, same number. Send me your home address by PM. I'll pack it and weigh it for postage cost ok?

It's a long way back but I thought that the only battery sets imported were green. I've never seen them in any other colour. I believe these were 49MHZ.
We had several of these sets. They have all been recycled but there may be a transmitter out there somewhere.

Hi Rod,
Thats great, however it appears I'm too new on this forum so I'm excluded from sending PM for a period of up to 90 days (new member). Any suggestions greatly accepted.

Hi Richie,
Thanks for your suggestion re the rubber bands and also the info re the extra battery in the tender. I had located it on the tender some days ago but then clean forgot about it when I bought the other batteries.

I agree with Tim. I bought three sets of Big Haulers from a "Cheap Jacks" in Norwich when they first came out in the early 80's. Not for the engines, more for the Gondola, flat car and caboose. £25.00 ! plus a circle of crap track, telegraph poles a coaling tower ("0" Scale) a pr. of barrier arms and some signs. Cheap as chips at the time when all else was LGB. Loco's all gone now, but still have the cars and bits in one form or another.

Well I have two (bashed the third into something else) - wanted cheap RC loco/s in case main track feed battery or controls went west. The're OK I suppose if you understand their limitations. I took the traction tyres off and had no problems (I had more probs with them on - R1 curves!). AND you can make a silk purse out of a sow's ears (maybe not the contents though:rolf:). Nothing's perfect in this world - half this forum wouldn't have any dialogue if it was:thumbup:

Your right there!!:rolf::rolf::rolf::rolf:

Agree there. As my signature says.......................................:rolf::rolf::rolf::rolf:

If the sound card doesn't work replacements are probably still available from Bachmann UK.
I paid about £16 for one 3yrs ago.
They are OK for indoors but rather quiet for outside use if you have a largish layout.

When I saw Richie post this a few days ago, I wondered if I had missed something - given that my memory fails on a regular basis!

Anyway, I thought I'd recharge the battery pack for one of mine (the other has six D cells) and see how it was today. Although I might not need it, I'm taking the trailer to a charity bash in a couple of weeks time, as I'm always a belt and braces man (metaphorically:rolf:).

I tested it out after lunch with a string of three coaches and no problems. I did re-check the tender and there is no provision for a PP3 - power comes from the main battery. The other is the same. As they were the green ones, did Bachmann actually make any RC types with the tender battery?

Another thing is that none of mine have any provision for a smoke unit. The slide type remote control works OK but there is no stop or physical register for the mid-position "off" mode so it needs a little dexterity in controlling (doesn't need a bunch of bananas for fingers :rolf:).

Also, before switching the power and sound on (cab), you need to switch on the remote control. Failure to swich on the remote first results in the loco taking off by itself! Don't ask how I know (or nearly smashed it).

Hi, Many thanks to you and indeed all who have contributed to my posting/enquiry. It's a great comfort in knowing there's help at hand.
