Yes, the old type of gearbox has a number of issues.
Firstly, the ratio is much too high. Secondly, it relies on being bonded to the motor, which is OK when the worm is pulling the motor onto the gearbox, but can eject the motor in the other direction.
I originally made a spring steel strap to hold the motor and gearbox together, which worked OK.
The loco never really had any useful running capabilities due to the high ratio.
I had a Bachmann motor from a battery Bug Mauler, with a 35:1 first gear, which I drilled out and force fitted to the axle. Then I made up a simple gearbox frame from a bit of aluminium flat bar, bent to a 'U' shape in the vice.
it works really well, but the motor is not perfectly aligned, and does not look pretty, hence there have never been any photos on this forum

Ivan (IP) now has a much better mark two motor gearbox which he sells separately, with a 40:1 drive. I'd buy a couple - it'll be well worth the price and it'll drop into the 0-6-0 chassis
