Krockodil Pulling power

Anybody got a Krock and dissapointed with the pulling power.
Mine will only pull two RHB coaches up my inclines.
I was in a customers the other day and happened across some square lead weights for the old style sash windows.I borrowed 5" of it.Came home and sawed it in half then opened the loco and remove the electronics and placed paper over the base to locate the "pins" That held the old weight. Transfered the rubbing to the lead and drilled the appropriate holes then reinstalled the main board and two chip carriers along with the sound unit and volume pot.. Testing wil commence later today

Phil, I had a Krok back in the 80's and that would pull 10-14 wagons no problem. Clean non-greasy track the loco should be OK. I wonder how steep is the rise of your gradient? I did put more weight in the thing in the 90's and would pull a house down. Alas sold it on by 2001. Alyn

Phil
It could be that your coaches have too many passengers! :rolf:

The rise is 6" in 10 foot. Tried degreasing the track and wheels and even looked at the skates to see if they were free to no avail , So this was the next move

Coat Hat door close it on the way out:bigsmile:

Have you checked out the traction tyres? I do know that old ones loose their grip quite a bit. So new ones would be a good start.

On the Ruschbahn we have two Krocks, they both happily pull 5 Bogies up around 1:30 grade on a curve to start with.

With weight added it is now pulling 5 coaches up the inclines. Result !

That's a pretty steep gradient! On my maths exactly 1 in 20 (5%). I have the same gradient and get slightly better results with 0-6-6-0 Mallets. Four 307x coaches on dry rail, but only three if there is any grease or damp.

As to making things better, the easiest things to do are (1) remove the skates completely and (2) add more weight: about 2.2kilos per bogie seems to be ideal. Taking the skates off completely will defintely help. Did that for my 2095 diesels and they could haul an extra coach: the skates were simply acting as brakes.

True Whatlep, but they do pick up power better and they scrape the track clean. My mallet (no skates as built) has now got worn wheels and really needs clean rails and wheels whilst locos with skates run better.

According to my Iphone the gradient is 5 deg .

Next the blue one!

Phil I had a Krock when I first started, you know my inclines, it just stopped and slipped, I asked if I could add wieght and was told I would strip the gears, so I sold it Les

I agree had a similar problem with my green chock box and found the skates wouldn't allow it to go round one curve in my track. Finnished up bending the top of the skate to allow it to slide freely.

BTW my GE44111 and 11 all make it ok

Tried that Alan but it kept sliding down the hill:bigsmile:

Now the acid test wagons. How many?????????????

Scores on the doors. Four lowsider, ten cement silos, one box van, two loaded stake wagons 34 axles. Then the low siders derail. They were at the front.

Happy bunny:bigsmile:

do bear in mind that skates imho, avoid pitting of the wheels due to micro arcing-

Don't worry steve the skates are staying

Good decision, if my memory of Krocks is correct they do not pick up juice of all 6 wheels. Thus taking the skates off can have a serious adverce effect on Power Pickup. They are not the best in terms of Power Pickup in spite of being Dual Bogied beasts.

If you look closely at the wheels of the Croc, I recall that the centre drivers fail to touch the rail - the loco is a Bo-Bo in reality. Having said that, though it's not one of the best haulers, it would still shift half a dozen bogies on the old Bredebahn. Flatter is better!
