(southern Germany - Colorado)
The heavy blowing hurrican that goes over Europe at this time knocked down parts of the Devils-Stairs-Bridge on the CCRR-Line from Ignacio to Creede.
The Management of the CCRR in Germany told that they are glad to say noone was hurt, but the damage is big.
They fear that there wont be operations on the pass-line for weeks.

After the heaviest winds have torn down even the great Truss-Bridge and the fish-bridges, pioneers took the fallen but undamaged bridge up again and told it tight with heavy loads.
But while the men were on work, another storm threw down the fishes oncemore. The CCRR Management decided immediately to stop all works and contiue when the weather cleared of.

"Are Railroadbridges save"?

That all lets us ask questions about the safety of passengers, crew and goods on the railroads. Its not the first time when bridges broke down even considered stable and safe.

in the 90´s the famous Kinzua Bridge was torn down by a tornado.
It seems that there is need of more service and better and safer instructions for building bridges.
Interestingly, many bridges (like on the CCRR now) are not damaged in structure, often they are just blown away by the wind.

The CCRR called all operation managers and technical engineers of the line to a trouble shooting how the line may be opened as fast as possible. The same gremium shall meet again an create new ways to have the bridges more safe. Its awaited that the constructions will now be under strong checking as far as there will be the first efforts in safer building in the summer this year.

The CCRR-Management begs for Pardon for there were never such damages even though the lines faced much stronger storm in history.

Nasty: very nasty in fact. You didn't have Sir Thomas Bouch design the bridge by any chance, did you?

If it blewdown, then it was'nt big enough or strong enough

Hi Frank,

Sorry to hear about your unexpected damage.

Not good, but I seem to remember that you mentioned a while back that the bowstring girder underbridge was due to be replaced?

Looks to me like the repair gangs are due to be out earlier than expected now.

What happened to the (missing?) abutment?

Yours Peter.
