Lawley chassis Help

7/8ths and 1/12th modeling in Railways and Birdwat
Country flag
Hi all,
After failing miserably to find anyone with a Ragleth power chassis for sale :( (even from the new batch that is available soon) and that was my best plan for a 7/8ths loco. I may have had a rough idea for a loco using a Lawley power chassis though.... but to see if it would work I was wondering if anyone out their with a Lawley could run a ruler over it for me please?

I need the overall length of the running boards from buffer beam to buffer beam and the width. The length of the boiler and smokebox plus the distance from the front of the smoke box to the buffer beam and the distance from the rear of the boiler to the rear bufferbeam ( so I can locate the boiler on the plan properly). Also a good idea of the positions of the dome and safety valves if possible.

I assume the gas tank (size etc) and footplate layout is the same as the Edrig?
Edit.... I see on a photo I've just seen the gas tank has an extended filler pipe etc to fit in the cab.... that may scupper my plan depending on its location etc but we shall see....
Mind you whilst I play with this idea I'll bet no one will have any of those chassis either...:D especially in my price range;)......And whether it would work rather depends on these measurements!

Thanks

Steph'

Mersey Lodge Works staff have taken measurements for Lawley class No 6 Glen Dour - without dismantling.
Length over buffer beams = 299mm Width = 115mm
Length of boiler & smokebox = 235mm
Smokebox saddle to front buffer beam = 28mm
"Firebox" to rear bufferbeam = 40mm

Pic shows positions of dome etc - note gas tank projects into cab area.

Layout not quite as Edrig - there is a boiler level fitting.

OOH Thank you... just what I needed!

Figured you could get the measurements without dismantling her.... wouldn't have wanted anyone to do that.

How does the Lawley run? I am used to Edrig and Regner and they have been great... but both 4 coupled, an 0-6-0 would be a first on my line, note running line has 5ft radius... the sidings are smaller but I rarely use them nowadays, I,m a watching the train go by sort of person in the garden. Shunting is done inside now!

Thanks again!!! I'll go away and see if the plan will come together.... If it does I'll post progress as and when.

Hi.... sorry to be a pain but I just looked at the photo again and could I trouble you for another couple of measurements.... the distance between the backplate of the "firebox" (rear of boiler) and the cab frontplate and the length of the cab (not including the bunker? It looks like the cab needs to be bigger (i.e longer) than on Ragleth etc to accommodate the gas regulator etc......

Too nice to be on computer today - been in shed making backsheets for 2 Billies.
OK - Lawley length of cab = 86mm
Boiler backhead to spectacle plate = 56mm

Loco is about 3½ yrs old and runs well and smoothly. I had to remove the centre flanges for my 32mm 2'6" curves.
Just posted a video to YouTube from last Wednesday running on a 45mm line:-

Strathpeffer & Dingwall Railway 2011
If you persevere past the cab ride (!) there's some footage of Lawley, R/C with ACME chuff pipe.
The owner of the line was driving her, and says she's more controllable than his Pearse Ulysses.

Another video from a couple of weeks ago, also on 45mm:-

MR/MHR Open Day 01/06/11
Again the first minute is my line, with Edrig minus body (now with Owain kit body)
Lawley appears after about 1 min.

I've got a brand new Lawley power unit Steph and it ran perfectly straight out of the box- got mine from John at track- shack.

Of course if you wanted an 0-4-0 you could always buy a Ragleth and sell the body on...

It's worth noting that the Lawley safety valves are a long way down the boiler and that, without a big cab, it might look a little odd as there will be a big gap between the spectacle plate and safety valves. I was looking at fitting a shorter cab to mine but decided against it for that reason- the gas tank could be worked around if the safety valve thing doesn't bother you- I was going to try and scrounge a Ragleth one from someone who has converted to coal firing.

Sorry for not responding sooner, I've been on me hols... if you want any measurements that you can only get with the body off let us know, I'll try and get you some dead side on photos etc of the bare running chassis when I get home to help you plan.

Thanks Guys... it was too nice to be on the computer... The Billy's sound interesting Rob! Thanks for the measurements and the info.....

Matt.... thanks for the info, I might be in touch  The thing with the safeties is an issue... but as I'm working in 7/8ths it makes things slightly different, the cab is big anyway. I'm toying with putting a "Baldrig" type body with an added rear bunker to the chassis (actually I like that better as an 0-6-0 than the 0-4-0). Did a sketch using the body and the measurements Rob gave me but I might need a couple more to be sure.

Incidentally I emailed Ian at Accucraft and he was very helpful and sent me some good photo's but unfortunately the measured drawings were in China...but he has offered to help if I couldn't get any more help here! Brilliant service. Mind you I have never found Accucraft anything other than brilliant!

Baldrig as an 0-6-0? Yes, here's my "Lady Baldrig".
It's the 16mm version, transferred from Edrig chassis, to Lady Anne.
The added backsheet and bunker are just visible.

Plonking a reworked Merlin W&L Hunslet body on mine, should be a little different :)

Excellent vid's Rob! Actually it was seeing your Lady Baldrig that made me wonder about an 0-6-0, so I got the pencil out and found in 7/8ths it looked rather good! A bit more to it than the standard 0-4-0 jobbie. I did think of adding trailing wheels for an 0-6-2 for a while.... still might I suppose.

Matt I'll be interested to see that Merlin body version, sounds fun! Should work well.

Right now I need to ask the bank (i.e my 'tother half!).......

Thanks agin

Haha Mel!! I'm not going there:bigsmile::bigsmile::bigsmile:

Mike's (GHWood) 2-6-2 is great... FinMaccool isn't it, another innovative design that completely changed the look of the loco. It never ceases to amaze me just how clever and talented everyone is on these forums...

I must admit I am still a little reluctant when it comes to bashing live steam, took me a while to do the Katie type work on my Edrig... but that went OK. I have to make a start though. Of course the hardest bit starting anything is that first cut (a bit like the first pencil line on a nice clean sheet of white paper when beginning a painting)!! I've had the Baldrig kit for a while so I really do need to start on it!

Steph,
I found the Baldrig (16mm) quite easy to assemble.
It went together without needing any carving of the loco chassis, so no bashing involved at the start.
I wrote it up for Garden Rail, and it may appear soon...

I'm going to add some bits.... such as a bunker etc so I'll get some practice in metal work.... I'll be keeping it simple so it should be easy......ish!

As its not designed for the Lawley chassis I foresee some issues and I'll have to add new fixing holes but that shouldn't be a problem.

Cheers
