Step one - clear route of vegetation, living and dead.

Step two - Tack down weed barrier. Used track to check position.

Step three - Spike edging in place.

Step four - fill edging with ballast. Leveling track will happen when I lay the track back in place.

Looks like a good plan, I assume that you're using set-track as opposed to Flexi?

I like that :clap::clap::clap:

One of the issues that cannot be overcome by weed matting, is the self seeding of air-borne weeds.

I will have to deal with that problem in the spring when weed killers are more effective :nod::nod::nod:

Looks like it should be a good foundation for the track. Will you build up the earth on each side of the edging after the track is laid ? Rhino chugger pointed out airborne seeds. he's correct but they should be easy to pull out of the ballast if you catch them when the growth is new. Please don't use Roundup or something similar. Try something like white vinegar mixed with salt or some other natural mixture.

We don't use roundup, if only because we have we'd rather not lose. On top of which very little grows under the pine trees. The outside of the edging will be larger rock. Except for those areas with trackside buildings, which will be pavers of some sort.

Won't be doing much of anything today. They predicted 10% chance of scattered showers. Looks like we're about to get dumped on.

How come weeds will grow from seeds in profusion, but shop bought seeds won't?:mad:

There is no such thing as a weed; there are common plants, which are more vigourous and will tend to colonise in their own way.

Inevitably, they will tend to be more hardy than cultivated plants :nerd::nerd::nerd::nerd:

A 'weed' is only a common plant in the wrong place :rock::rock::rock::rock:

That is one of the reasons that I do not really like Weed Matting. Cooch Grass and other Weeds tend to throw their roots between the Holes in it. I much prefer in your situation to use Black Plastic Sheeting the sort that Builders use in foundations. Then the Weeds will only have roots in the Stones and are easy to remove. Of course you do have to make the odd hole or two otherwise it will become a breeding ground for Midges.

Even the proper weed barrier stuff? I've used it in my garden and it seems to do the deed, it even let's the water drain out.

Dont mention the C word!
