Hi all,
I found someone who was offering to print a LB&SCR D1x Steam Locomotive for sale in HO scale, and we have discussed printing one in 1:24, with the goal of fitting a common Stainz 0-4-0 motor block with an idler to keep the price down. Obviously an LGB 2018 mogul block would be better, but pricey. Will update this post when I receive the prototype. Rendering attached.

Would not a Bachmann large scale 'Thomas' be a more suitable donor for the chassis?

You should be able to get a good example for a similar price to a Stainz?

That's a good suggestion Phil! Had also considered a Bachmann 4-6-0, but they aren't as reliable as the venerable Stainz. Now I need to go measure...

Oh, I agree, the Bachmann mechanism is nothing like as robust as a Stainz. But I will be interested to see how the wheelbase and wheel diameter work for you?

D1 had 5’6” driving wheels which at 1:24 would be near double the size of Stainz, even the so called G scale Hornby Harry Potter Hall wheels would be on the small side. You may get a better looking loco if you smalled the scale to perhaps 1:29 or even 1:32 but then it would look small compared to our NG rolling stock. Tricky dilemma.
