LGB 2071D circuit board - can I bypass it?

I recently picked up a cheap non-working LGB 2071D 'U' class loco. All the lights work but it doesn't run at all, it's completely dead. Upon taking it apart it appears the circuit board is defective - when I bypass it and connect power direct to the motor it runs fine. So my question is, what purpose does the board serve? Can I safely eliminate it? It's an older split chassis model with metal valve gear and no pickup shoes so I'm guessing it doesn't have the 5v lights - or maybe it does? Any advice much appreciated before I go ahead and start cutting wires and soldering!

Thanks, Glen

Hi Glen
No I think that someone will possibly say I am talking Dingo's Kidneys, but here goes.

You can eliminate the circuit board on pretty well most LGB loco's. In fact for many to be Chipped up that is the only option. But if you are not chipping up then the board is there to run power to the Lights and change them if you reverse the loco (not sure if that is the case on very old LGB though) and it is also there for the wiring to the Switch.

So go ahead and rewire carefully and you will have no problems. You could completely replace the board functions by wiring up the lights using Diodes and resisters if the bulbs are 5v. If not 5v then you should just need the resisters.

Hope this helps,
JonF

The PCB will have no impact on function of the motor if it is stock and has not been modified.

Look carefully at the cover on the early Us once you remove the body shell. Getting it all in right is a real PITA.... I have a 36+ year old 2073 that is giving me a bit of a fit.
